history

Clapton bought the guitar in London in 1964, six years after the first ES-335 was built . The Cherry Red is also known by the nickname Cream Guitar because the word Cream can be seen on the instrument case.

Clapton first played the Cherry Red live in 1968 during Cream's Farewell Tour in the United States. A video recording with Clapton and his Cherry Red was made on November 26, 1968 during Cream's farewell concert at the Royal Albert Hall . Clapton later played this guitar with Blind Faith . The last time the Cherry Red was used was a live performance by Clapton on June 29, 1996 in Hyde Park, London .

In 2004, Clapton auctioned the instrument for $ 847,500, which he donated to the Crossroads Center. The price was the highest ever for a Gibson guitar .

On August 1, 2005, 250 replicas of the Cherry Red were produced under the designation “Eric Clapton Crossroads ES-335”.
