biography

He was born in Podor in the Senegalese province of Fouta in 1953 and belongs to the Tukulor people (also Haalpulaar). His parents were fishermen , but his mother sang for pleasure, which made him familiar with a cappella singing and traditional melodies. In 1974 he decided to study music in Dakar and later also in Paris . In 1984 he returned to Senegal because his mother had died and stayed there. In 1985 he founded the band Daande Lenol (Voice of the People) made up of nine musicians, including Mansour Seck and Mbassou Niang . Baaba Maal tries to develop music that is close to his roots (e.g. Kora , Tama ), but also uses modern elements (e.g. electric guitar ). In 2001 he worked with Hans Zimmer on the score for the film Black Hawk Down and took over the vocal part in four pieces of music. On July 7, 2007 he performed at the Live Earth concert in South Africa. In 2008 he recorded the theme song for the computer game Far Cry 2 .
