Lisa Gerrard (born April 12, 1961 in Melbourne ) is an Australian musician , composer and singer .

Live and act

Gerrard first played in the Australian post-punk bands Microfilm and Junk Logic in 1980 and released her first title as a solo artist a year later: "Mosaic". She became known as a member of the musical group Dead Can Dance, founded in 1981 together with Brendan Perry . She plays one of the main roles in the film El Niño de la Luna (1989). In 1995 her first solo album was released with the title The Mirror Pool ( 4AD / Beggars Group). She is known for her deep alto voice and sings almost exclusively in pseudo-language.

With the dissolution of Dead Can Dance in 1998 Lisa Gerrard was mainly active as a composer for film and television. Some well-known films for which she composed the soundtrack are Insider (1999), Ali (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), Whale Rider (2002) and Man Under Fire (2004). She also sang for the soundtrack Gladiator (2000), which she composed with Hans Zimmer . In 2001 she was the first and so far only woman to receive the Golden Globe Award in the category of best film music .

In 2005 Lisa Gerrard went on tour with Brendan Perry as Dead Can Dance in Europe and North America for the first time after seven years of separation. Various live CDs were released from the tour.

In 2006, a video album showing her life and career was released for the first time. It is called Sanctuary and has also been available in Germany since June 2007.

Lisa Gerrard stopped working on the planned album Mantras of a Lost Archetype in 2006 and instead released a solo album entitled The Silver Tree on Rubber Records . The album contains self-composed pieces, including three songs that were already presented live during the tour with Dead Can Dance 2005 ( Yaminar - only in Europe; Minus Sanctus and The Love that Cannot Be ).

In 2007 she went on a solo tour in Europe and North America, where she presented songs from her new album The Silver Tree , but also pieces from her soundtrack career and the Dead Can Dance period.

In November 2007 the artist recorded a double CD called Farscape with the electronic musician Klaus Schulze and performed with him in 2008 at the Night-of-the-Prog Festival on the Loreley , in the Schillertheater Berlin and in Poland .

On November 2, 2009, Lisa Gerrard received at the Screen Music Awards of the Australian APRA Awards for the "Best Feature Film Score" in the film Balibo .

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

In 2018 she recorded a collaboration album with The Mystery Of the Bulgarian Voices ( Angelite ) and toured with the choir in 2019.
