Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album
The Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album (German Grammy Award for the best comedy album ) is a music award that has been awarded to artists for high-quality works in the field of humor since 1959.
Background and story
At the Grammy Awards , artistic achievement, technical competence and overall musical achievement in various categories are awarded annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), regardless of the number of sales of the work.
In order to receive the award, the performer must have released a spoken or musical album in the year prior to the award ceremony that contains at least 51% previously unreleased material. If the album contains a comedy program, this must also consist of at least 51% new material. The album can have been recorded in the studio as well as live, recordings from current television or radio appearances are also possible. Audio books and TV or radio recordings that were not made in the previous year of the award are excluded from the award.
The Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album was first presented at the first Grammy Awards in 1959. From 1959 to 1967 he was awarded under the name of Best Comedy Performance (dt. Best Comedy Performance ), whereby the award in 1960 and 1961 was divided into the categories of music and language. In 1968 the award was renamed the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording (German Grammy award for the best comedy recording ), this designation lasted until 1991. In 1992 and 1993 and since 2004 the award has been given under the name Best Comedy Album , so that since then only albums can be awarded. Between 1994 and 2003, the prize was awarded only in the spoken area and Grammy Award for Best Spoken Comedy Album (dt. Grammy Award for Best Spoken Comedy Album ) renamed and assigned a separate category.
statistics
David Seville was the first musician to receive the award at the first Grammy Awards in 1959. To date, Bill Cosby is the most frequently awarded performer with seven awards. George Carlin has been nominated 16 times, holding the record for most nominations. Of these he was able to win five times, his last award in 2009 was given to him posthumously. Two artists, Garrison Keillor and Stan Freberg , have been nominated six times without ever winning the award. With the exception of the Canadian Tommy Chong , who won together with Cheech Marin in 1974 , and the New Zealand group Flight of the Conchords , the award has so far only been given to Americans .
