Carroll O'Connor

John Carroll O'Connor (born August 2, 1924 in New York City , † June 21, 2001 in Culver City ) was an American actor .

Life

Carroll O'Connor was born on August 2, 1924 in the Bronx , New York , and grew up in Forest Hills. After graduating from high school, Carroll served as a Marine in the US Navy in 1942 and was stationed in Europe during World War II . In 1946, O'Connor began studying English at the University of Montana . During this time he began to be interested in the theater. In 1951 he went to Ireland to study theater studies at the National University of Ireland . Carroll O'Connor was discovered during a college performance and then engaged for the ensemble of the Dublin Gate Theater.

In 1954 he returned to New York. However, his attempts to gain a foothold on Broadway as an actor failed. After several off-Broadway productions, O'Connor ventured into television in 1960. Until 1972 he mainly played guest roles in well-known television series such as Bonanza , Auf der Flucht and Solo for ONCEL During this time, O'Connor was also in film productions such as And the Night Will Be Silent (1961), Cleopatra (1963), First Victory ( In Harm's Way ) starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas in the lead roles (1965), Hawaii (1966), The Devil's Brigade (1968), Frank Patch - Your Hours Are Counted (1969) and Shock Troop Gold (1970).

1971 O'Connor got the role of Archie Bunker in the American hit series All in the Family . O'Connor played the same role from 1979 to 1983 in the spin-off Archie Bunker's Place . From 1988 to 1995 he was sheriff Bill Gillespie in the television series In the Heat of the Night based on the 1967 feature film of the same name. His adopted son Hugh O'Connor was also part of the regular cast of the series.

O'Connor then appeared in recurring guest roles on the television series Party of Five (1996) and Crazy About You (1996-1999). He had his last film roles as Leo Barnes in the comedy film Gideon (1999) alongside Christopher Lambert , Charlton Heston and Shirley Jones and as Marty O'Reilly in the film drama Back to You (2000) alongside Minnie Driver and David Duchovny .

After the suicide of his adoptive son Hugh on March 28, 1995 as a result of long and serious substance abuse, O'Connor publicly campaigned for anti-drug and drug education. In 1998 his autobiography "I Think I'm Outta Here - A Memoir of All My Families" was published . From 1951 until his death he was married to his wife Nancy.

On June 21, 2001, Carroll O'Connor died of complications from a heart attack . He was buried in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery .
