Jerome Allen "Jerry" Seinfeld (born April 29, 1954 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ) is an American stand-up comedian , actor , screenwriter , producer and writer . He was best known for the successful sitcom Seinfeld , named after him , which ran on NBC from 1989 to 1998 . He was the lead actor, screenwriter and executive producer on the series.

Life

Seinfeld grew up as the only child of a Jewish family in Massapequa on Long Island , where he attended Birch Lane Elementary School and later Massapequa High School. He then went to the State University of New York in Oswego , which he left after a few semesters. Immediately after graduating from Queens College , he made his first open mic appearances on New York's Catch A Rising Star in 1976. A short time later, Seinfeld appeared in an HBO special about Rodney Dangerfield .

Seinfeld had a small role as the postman "Frankie" in the sitcom Benson 1979, in which he had little success, which led to his being promptly fired. Later he will pick up the name "Benson" in his box office hit Bee Movie .

In May 1981, Seinfeld was able to complete an extremely successful appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson . Seinfeld has now been a regular guest on a variety of shows including the late night show with David Letterman and the Merv Griffin Show .

In 1989, together with Larry David , Seinfeld created the sitcom The Seinfeld Chronicles for NBC . The show was taken over by the broadcaster and renamed Seinfeld . On the show, Seinfeld played a fictional version of himself. He said the show was inspired by the classic 1950s sitcom The Abbott and Costello Show . In addition to Seinfeld himself, Julia Louis-Dreyfus , Michael Richards and Jason Alexander (whose character was based on Larry David's person) could be seen in the leading roles.

Seinfeld became one of the most famous and successful sitcoms in American television history. Jerry Seinfeld became the highest paid television actor of the time. In the nine years of its running, nine seasons were produced. In 1998 the Finale of Seinfeld was broadcast.

Since the end of his sitcom, Seinfeld has largely retired from acting. Occasionally he only appears as a guest star in other television series of his comedian friends, for example in 2007 in an episode of 30 Rock or in two episodes of Louie .

In 2009, starred himself in the seventh season of the HBO series Leave It, Larry! . The series is written by and with Larry David, his good friend and co-creator of Seinfeld . In 2017 his stand-up comedy special Jerry Before Seinfeld was released on Netflix . In 2019 he made a guest appearance on the Netflix series Huge in France . In 2020 he made a deal with Netflix, for which Seinfeld included two more stand-up comedy specials. The first was released on May 5, 2020 with the title Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours to Kill .

Private

Jerry Seinfeld has been married to Jessica Seinfeld (* 1971 as Nina Sklar ) since 1999 and has three children. Jerry Seinfeld's ancestors on his mother's side come from Syria, his paternal grandfather emigrated in 1903 from Stanislau, then Austria .

Seinfeld said he was never a practicing Scientologist, but in previous years he took part in several Scientology courses, which he said was helpful for his career.

Seinfeld owns a collection of around 150 cars. He is also considered the owner of one of the largest Porsche collections (he has 43 pieces) in the world. Among other things, the last air-cooled Porsche 911 , model 993 , was delivered to him. In 2002, Seinfeld bought a plot on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City , where he built a two-story garage for 1.4 million US dollars to a portion to store his collection.
