action

Chelsea Brown, a reporter for the New York Times , spends a day interviewing the comedian and recovering alcoholic Andre Allen, the star of the hit movie Hammy The Bear, about a cop in a bear suit. Chelsea forgot her audio recorder so they go to her apartment first. There they are discussing a magazine article about the Cinderella complex. Chelsea explains that Cinderella left something to let the prince know she wanted to see him again.

Andre tries for a foray into serious films with Uprize portraying the Haitian Revolution character, Dutty Boukman, and is sensitive to criticism, particularly Times critic James Nielson, whose previous reviews of Andre's work have been negative and offensive. As the interview begins in his limo, Andre recalls his lowest point when he was in Houston in 2003 and met Jazzy Dee, who provided him with drugs, alcohol, and women. When Jazzy refused to pay the women, they claimed they had been raped, leading to Andre's arrest and subsequent sobriety. After the limousine was hit by a taxi, Andre and Chelsea wander through the city. Andre stops at a jewelry store to pick up the rings for his wedding to reality TV star Erica Long. After a subtle, tense interaction with Andre helping an acquaintance who is actually his father, they visit the apartment of Andre's old friends and his ex-girlfriend. Chelsea interviews everyone and learns that Andre wasn't particularly funny when he started in stand-up comedy. They nominate their five favorite rappers, including a sixth in their list. Andre visits radio shows like Opie and Anthony to promote Uprize and attends a press conference with other stars like Taraji P. Henson and Gabourey Sidibe. To his chagrin, Andre is asked when there will be another Hammy movie.

At a hotel, Andre and Chelsea unexpectedly meet their boyfriend Brad and his boyfriend Ryan, who is wearing Brad's shirt. Chelsea concludes that Brad is cheating on her with Ryan. She and Andre, both alcoholics, stop at a liquor store but resist buying it. Chelsea explains in detail what the signs were that Brad was gay. Andre laughs and calls Chelsea naive. She gets angry and insults his movie, but the two end up kissing. Andre asks to borrow Chelsea's cell phone because his own has died. While using it, he sees an email from her editor stating that James Nielson is Chelsea himself. The truth devastates Andre, who angrily tells Chelsea that he never felt funny unless he was drunk or high and is now afraid for his career. Desperate, he's playing in a supermarket. He is arrested by the police. In jail, Andre calls Erica, who is angry about the arrest, mostly because she will look after her image. She tells Andre that this piece of fame is all she has as she believes she has no other talent. Erica's manager Benny picks up the phone and tells Andre to go to his bachelorette party to get good press and fly to the wedding. Andre's bodyguard Silk saves Andre and they go to a strip club for a bachelorette party with a theme based on Hammy The Bear. There Andre is related to Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler and Whoopi Goldberg. They give him different views on marriage and sex. Andre meets Chelsea, who wants to make it up to you and invites him to follow her.

Andre, Chelsea, and Silk head to the comedy basement, where Andre takes the stage and gets up for the first time in years. He still turns out to be funny and the crowd loves him. After the gig, he tells Chelsea that he was inspired to get up after being in jail and speaking to DMX, who told Andre he didn't want to continue rapping and instead sing.

They bring Chelsea to her home, where she and Andre share one final kiss before leaving. Andre asks about her five best rappers she lists. During the drive, Silk tells Andre that he should have gone after Chelsea. Andre goes through the gift bag from the party and finds items like a scented candle and a bottle of vodka. Then he pulls out a slipper and Silk smiles.
