Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe ( IPA : [ˈɡæbʉrˌeɪ ˈsɪdiˌbeɪ] ; born May 6, 1983 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American actress. She gained fame through her first film role in Lee Daniels ' feature film Precious - Life is Precious (2009), for which she received an Oscar nomination, among other things .

biography

Gabourey Sidibe grew up as the daughter of R&B and gospel singer Alice Tan Ridley, a former special education teacher, in Harlem , New York . Her father was a taxi driver from Senegal . Sidibe's parents separated when she was young. She has a brother. From childhood she was teased because of her overweight and Senegalese first name. At the age of eleven, Sidibe began a diet under pressure from family and friends, but she did not stick to it. It was not until junior high school that she began to accept herself according to her own statements, which was accompanied by the shortening of her first name. "I was grumpy, like a little goblin kid, but when I changed my name to Gabby I got a new personality, which is bizarre, but it turned out to be ..." said Sidibe.

Sidibe attended the Borough of Manhattan Community College , City College of New York, and Mercy College . Like her mother, she practiced singing and took part in several theatrical performances at New York's Lehman College , where a friend was studying theater studies. From the fall of 2007, Sidibe was earning a living in a call center and planning to study psychology .

During her first week at college, Sidibe attended the casting for Lee Daniels ' feature film Precious , which she had brought to her mother's attention (according to other sources, an acquaintance at Lehman College ). The social drama is a film adaptation of the novel Push by the African-American writer Sapphire . It tells the story of a 16-year-old obese girl from Harlem's black district who is raped by her own father and abused by her mother. In order to leave the misery behind, she tries to overcome her illiteracy . Although Sidibe had no professional acting training, she received the title role in Daniels' film, which was co-produced by talk show host Oprah Winfrey . "It was really Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, movie star," said Sidibe, who came to the audition with no expectations. Director Lee Daniels would later praise the amateur actress for her cleverness.

Precious premiered in mid-January 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival , where the film won multiple awards and received critical acclaim. As the least well-known member of an unusual acting ensemble around Paula Patton , Mo'Nique , Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz , Sidibe is the glue that holds it together, according to the New York Times , while other critics share her nuanced and deeply sympathetic portrait of an almost completely inactive character Billy Bob Thornton's Oscar- nominated star role in Sling Blade (1996) compared.

In late 2009, Sidibe was awarded the National Board of Review's Young Actor Award for her feature film debut . The Independent Spirit Award followed in 2010, as well as an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress . The amateur actress, who weighs 168 kilograms, was also popular with her numerous appearances on US talk shows, where, contrary to her parade role, she presented herself as self-confident, smart and quick-witted. “I've learned to love myself because I go to sleep with myself every night and wake up with myself every morning, and if I didn't like myself there would be no reason to live this life. I'm happy with it… ”, says Sidibe. But she also affirmed parallels to her film character. “I know this girl, I've recognized her in so many different people. So she was really, really familiar to me. She wasn't a [...] drilled Hollywood figure, she is a real person. "

Following the success of her first film role, Sidibe appeared as a rebellious and malevolent student in Victoria Mahoney's 2011 independent film Yelling To The Sky . She received another engagement for Bill Condon's television series The Big C (2010).
