1988: 17-year-old Kat Connors lives a quiet life with her parents Eve and Brock in an American suburb and has her first relationship with her neighbor Phil. One day Eve Connors disappears without a trace. Kat and her father report the disappearance to the police, but there is no indication of Eve's whereabouts. Kat suspects that her mother has left the family as she has suffered from depression for a long time and was not only unhappy in her marriage, but also jealous of her daughter's beauty and youth.
Kat tries the disappearance of her mother, as well as a recurring dream since then, in which she wanders through a snow storm, in therapy with Dr. Process Thaler. At the same time, she begins an affair with Detective Scieziesciez, who is investigating her mother's case because her boyfriend Phil no longer wants to sleep with her.
1991: Kat is now studying at Berkley University. During the holidays she visits her father, who has a new girlfriend, and her friends. After spending the night together, she learns from Detective Scieziesciez that he had suspected her father of murder during the investigation into her mother's case because he believed Eve was having an affair. Kat then believes that her ex-boyfriend Phil was having this affair and confronts him. Phil dismisses Kat's suspicions but believes Brock knows what happened to Eve.
Kat now also suspects her father of murder and gains access to a locked freezer in which she suspects her mother's corpse. However, their suspicions are not confirmed and Brock protests his innocence. The next day, Kat flies back home.
From the off , Kat tells that her father Brock confessed to Eve's murder a short time later in a drunken state. Her body was actually in the freezer, but he had buried it during Kat's visit in the mountains, fearing that the body would be discovered. While in custody, Brock hanged himself in his cell.
In the last scene the events of the murder are shown. It wasn't Eve who had an affair with Phil, but Brock. As Eve, the two red-handed caught and Phil leaves the house, she laughs at her husband. This then loses his temper and strangles her.
