Sheryl Lynn Lee (born April 22, 1967 in Augsburg ) is an American actress . She became known through the role of Laura Palmer in David Lynch's mystery series Twin Peaks (1990-1991, 2017) and the film prequel Twin Peaks - The Film (1992).

Life

Youth and career start with Twin Peaks

Lee was born in Augsburg as the daughter of an artist and an architect. She grew up in Boulder , Colorado , where she attended Fairview High School. After graduating from high school, she first studied in Pasadena , California at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and later attended acting courses at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the National Theater Conservatory in Denver and the University of Colorado. After graduation, Lee moved to Seattle, where she began her career as a stage actress.

Early in her career, Lee gained international fame through the role of Laura Palmer in the television series Twin Peaks (1990-1991) directed by David Lynch and Mark Frost . Since Laura Palmer is already dead from the beginning of the series, Lee was originally only supposed to appear as a corpse and for a few flashbacks. Lynch was so impressed with her portrayal that he wanted her to have a greater presence on the series and wrote a second role for her - that of Laura's cousin Madeline "Maddy" Ferguson - which Lee played until the middle of the second season. In the series finale at the end of the second season, she was seen again in both roles. Parallel to Twin Peaks, David Lynch also cast Lee in a small role as the Good Witch in his film Wild at Heart - The Story of Sailor and Lula (1990).

After the end of Twin Peaks , Lynch made another feature film about the series, which was released in Germany in 1992 under the title Twin Peaks - The Film . The film is a prequel and shows the events before the murder of Laura Palmer , so Lee was able to play the role here in more detail. The film was received negatively by critics and audiences at the time and was a financial flop . Lee received positive reactions to her acting performance and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for best actress.

After the end of Twin Peaks , Lee first appeared in the title role in the play Salome alongside Al Pacino in 1992 and then focused on her film career.

In the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Daniel Woodrell, Lee plays April in a supporting role .
