The Soap Opera Digest Awards is a US - Television Award of the TV magazine Soap Opera Digest .

The prize was awarded for the first time in 1984. This award was preceded by the less lavish Soapy Awards , which have been presented since 1977.

The Soap Opera Digest Award is intended to honor good acting performances by actors who appear in the soap operas . The winners are voted on by the readers of the magazine.

It first aired on US television in 1984. It was presented by David Hasselhoff and his then-wife Catherine Hickland .

In the first two years the winners as well as the nominees were chosen by the readers. As a result, the soap opera Zeit der Sehnsucht cleared everything in almost all categories. From the third year on, the editorial team of the magazine took over the nomination.

No awards were presented in 2002 and 2004.
