Winter's Bone is an American independent film released in 2010 by the director and screenwriter Debra Granik . It is about the living conditions of socially disadvantaged Americans. A young woman sets out to find her missing father. The literary template for the multi-award-winning film comes from US author Daniel Woodrell . The cinema release in Germany was March 31, 2011.

action

Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly lives with her two younger siblings and her depressed ( catatonic ) mother in poor conditions in the Ozarks in Missouri . Her father Jessup, who made crystal , was caught by the police. Ree learns he was released on bail and has since disappeared. As he said bail agent has made available as security house and land the family, threatened with the loss of the home, if he does not appear at the next court date.

To avert this misfortune, Ree sets out to find her father. The family's drug-criminal environment sees this as a threat to the secrecy of their businesses. Ree is strongly warned not to continue looking for her father. However, she learns that he was last seen with three men and that even an old friend no longer wanted to know. The bond broker comes by: Jessup didn't show up for his court hearing. The mortgaged house is forfeited and will be confiscated in a week, unless Ree can prove that her father missed the appointment because he is dead. As she investigates further, three women, Merab Milton and her sisters, who are widely related, brutally beat her. Your uncle Teardrop can prevent worse; he shows up at the scene, takes responsibility that Ree won't reveal anything, and is allowed to take her with him. So desperate Ree is that, halfway recovered, she applies to the Army to collect the $ 40,000 that will be paid to volunteers. But the recruiting officer explains that as a minor she needs parental consent. He admonishes them to invest their energy in dealing with domestic problems. Together with Teardrop, Ree tracks down the three men Jessup was last seen with. They respond to Teardrop's questions with threats. He then smashes the windshield of her car with an ax.

The Miltons are talked about because they are doing nothing to save the Dolly family, who is related to them, from ruin. To avoid further investigation, Merab Milton and her sisters pick up Ree at home and take her into a swamp by boat at night. There it becomes a certainty what Ree had previously only feared: her father was murdered, his body was hidden and should have disappeared to protect the perpetrators. In order to be able to prove Jessup's death to the police and to save the dolly's house, Merab saws off the corpse's hands with a chainsaw . Ree takes her dead father's hands to the police, and an investigation confirms they are Jessup's hands.

At the end of the film, the bond agent gives Ree the money left over from the bond. He expresses his admiration for Ree, she proudly claims that she is "a dolly". She stays with her family. Her uncle Teardrop raises chicks for the younger siblings and says he knows who his brother's killer is but does not reveal it. Ree offers him her dead father's banjo, Teardrop asks Ree to keep it for him and leaves. It remains to be seen whether he will try to avenge his brother.

background

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Woodrell. After Ang Lee's 1999 novel Who Rides with the Devil , this is the second film adaptation of one of his books. Director Debra Granik and producer Anne Rosellini had contacted Woodrell before his novel was published. Woodrell knew and liked Granik's first feature film, Down to the Bone, from 2004, and was happy to allow Granik and Rosellini to make the film. Together they visited the Ozark Plateau, the area where the story takes place. Woodrell showed them typical local landscapes and buildings and introduced the filmmakers to the locals.

“Not only was 'Winter's Bone' actually filmed in a remote village in southern Missouri, Granik also found many of the actors and cast them on location. However, it is not only the amateur actors and the natural settings that give 'Winter's Bone' a documentary vein, but also the largely lack of purely cinematic means. ”“ In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jennifer Lawrence told something about the scene the movie Winter's Bone, in which she had to skin a squirrel. When asked if she actually did it or if it was a movie trick, Lawrence replied, 'For PETA , I should say the scene was set, but fuck PETA.' "

Reviews

“Thanks to its documentary excursions, authentic locations and an ensemble supplemented by many amateur actors, the film paints a credible picture of the“ white trash ”environment, whereby it does not show the protagonists, but engages with their environment. The unadorned look is caught by gentle humor and animal and thing symbolism and illustrated by a powerful, melancholy film music. "

“On the basis of the precisely worked out social background, 17-year-old Ree can be distinguished from youthful hero characters from Hollywood productions. Although she shares essential character traits with Hannah Montana [...] such as courage, willpower or the willingness to sacrifice oneself for something, she appears to be an alternative to the consumer-oriented hedonism of this fictional teenage star. [...] You will hardly find another young film protagonist who embodies selflessness and a sense of responsibility in such a touching way. "
