Debra S. Granik (born February 6, 1963 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) is an American film director , screenwriter and camerawoman .

Life

Debra Granik grew up in the Washington, DC area . After graduating from Brandeis University with a bachelor's degree in political science in 1985 , she studied film at the Tisch School of the Arts , a faculty at New York University . During her time at Brandeis, Granik's political stance was shaped by studying the history of documentary film and becoming an active member of the feminist media movement of the early 1980s.

After her student short film Snake Feed received a lot of attention and awards, her feature film debut Down to the Bone also won her several awards and nominations, including a Gotham Award nomination and an Independent Spirit Award . Her biggest success so far was the drama Winter's Bone , for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2011 .
