Love Me Like You Do (Original title: Jackie & Ryan ) is an American romantic drama from 2014 directed by Ami Canaan Mann , who also wrote the screenplay. The film premiered at the 2014 Venice International Film Festival . The main roles are played by Katherine Heigl and Ben Barnes .

Homeless street musician Ryan Brenner gets the chance to record his music in a friend's recording studio in Portland . While passing through, he would like to visit his friend “Cowboy”, but he learns from his wife Virgina that “Cowboy” is traveling through the country again to make music. When Ryan wants to travel on, he meets former singer Jackie Laurel when she is hit by a car. Together with the driver of the car, Ryan brings Jackie home to her mother Miriam, where she has lived since the separation from her husband. As a thank you, Jackie invites him to dinner with her mother and daughter Lia. The two become friends and Jackie offers him to stay with her, which Ryan accepts.

The next day, Ryan discovers that the roof of Miriam's house is leaking and decides to stay longer to fix it. Meanwhile, Jackie prepares for a custody battle with her husband, who wants to sue for sole custody of Lia. In order to be able to afford a lawyer, she pawns her jewelry and decides to sell her New York apartment.

Jackie and Ryan attend a music event with Miriam and Lia, at which Jackie performs with her daughter. After the gig, Jackie and Ryan get closer.

Ryan learns that his friend "Cowboy" has passed away. After the funeral, he decides to continue his journey. Jackie gives him a new guitar as a goodbye. Ryan reaches his destination and records his music in the recording studio, including a song he wrote about Jackie. Then he returns to her and the two become a couple.

The shooting took place in Utah in 2014 and lasted 20 days.

The film premiered on August 30, 2014 at the Venice International Film Festival , where it was nominated for the Venice Horizons Award. In Germany it was released directly on DVD and Blu-ray on May 20, 2016 .

The film received mostly mixed to positive reviews. At Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 55/100 based on 15 reviews, while at Rotten Tomatoes 62 percent of the 21 reviews were positive.

The film service believes Love Me Like You Do is a “pleasantly relaxed love film ” that deals with the “conflict between artistic passion and material necessities as well as dealing with the failure of lifelong dreams”. It goes on to say that there are “certainly concessions to Hollywood melodramas ”, but the film “proves to be remarkably unruly against clichés ”.
