action

The psychologist Wendy Brown runs the Comfort House in Oregon , a women's shelter for abused women. She lives there with Beth, Missy, Joanie and Sharon. Through her work, Wendy draws the anger from some of the parishioners whose wives have found shelter there. When one of them, Walter Jackson, is found murdered, the sheriff "Bear" Trapp begins to investigate Wendy.

While shopping, Wendy is threatened by Carl, Joanie's husband. A short time later, Wendy is actually shot at. She sees a black pick-up truck driving away. Wendy then wants to file a complaint with Sheriff Trapp because she suspects Carl, but he gets rid of her.

When Carl is shot dead on a hunting trip the next day, the sheriff increasingly suspects Wendy of being a murderer and systematically killing the husbands of the abused women who are in her home. Only the Deputy Curtis, who is in love with Wendy, believes in her innocence.

Meanwhile, Wendy is almost run over by the driver of the black pick-up truck while jogging. When she learns of Carl's death, which she suspects, shortly afterwards, she tells Curtis that she believes the driver of the car wanted her to accuse Carl and is now charged with the murder of him.

Meanwhile, the sheriff finds an envelope with a newspaper article about Wendy on his car, stating that she has been accused of the murder of her brother-in-law. When Curtis approaches Wendy about the case, she tells him that her brother-in-law hit her sister and she came to her aid. When he attacked her too, she shot him in self-defense. Her sister eventually died as a result of the abuse by her brother-in-law.

One evening, Cindy shows up at the Comfort House after being beaten up by her husband Harley. He also appears there a short time later and threatens Wendy. He also implies that it was he who tried to run her over. However, Wendy can chase him out of the house. Back home, Harley is ambushed and killed in his garage. When the sheriff and his deputies arrive at the scene and find the murder weapon - a kitchen knife - he again suspects Wendy. This leads to a fight between the sheriff and Curtis, who is now in a relationship with Wendy, and Curtis is suspended from duty.

Wendy drives to the crime scene with her roommate, Missy, hoping to find clues to prove her innocence. They find a safety vest there and it turns out that it belonged to the son of her roommate Sharon. Bradley, Sharon's son, died in a hunting accident, and Sharon told her that her husband, Gary, was furious at the men killed because he believed they were to blame for Bradley's death. Wendy tells Curtis of her discovery and takes him to Gary to confront him. Gary then threatens the two with a gun and confesses to the murders of the three men. However, Wendy can calm him down and get him to give up.

The following day, Wendy is almost run over again. She explains to Curtis that she still believes someone is trying to cover up the circumstances surrounding Bradley's death. Curtis tells her that the body was found and that a farmhouse burned down that same day. Wendy believes there is a connection between the cases and, through her research, finds out that within a short period of time several pieces of land around the burned down farmhouse were first acquired and then sold to a construction development company who were planning to build a condominium there. While Wendy is collecting information about the company on the Internet, she is mugged and drugged. When she wakes up, she is tied to scaffolding that was set on fire. With the help of Curtis, who shows up just in time, she can free herself.

Wendy and Curtis drive to the place where Bradley's body was found. Wendy believes that Bradley, a photography enthusiast, took pictures of the farmhouse, gathering evidence of arson. When Wendy later returns to the place, she finds Bradley's missing camera and a short time later also the memory card in the safety vest that has already appeared.

When Wendy looks at the pictures on her computer, she realizes that the murdered men and Sheriff "Bear" Trapp are responsible for the arson. At that moment, the sheriff appears in the "Comfort House" and confirms her discovery to Wendy. The men set the house on fire on behalf of the construction development company for a fee. Because young Bradley discovered her, he had to die. Trapp now tries to kill Wendy too and pursues her through the house with a gun, but she beats him and shoots him in self-defense.
