The Secret of Dual Spiers ( English original title: Dual Spiers ) is the twelfth episode of the fifth season of the US crime series Psych . Directed by Matt Shakman , the episode was written by Bill Callahan and starring James Roday . It was first shown on December 1, 2010 on USA Network .

The episode pays homage to the television series Twin Peaks , from which the seven actors Sherilyn Fenn , Sheryl Lee , Dana Ashbrook , Robyn Lively , Lenny Von Dohlen , Catherine E. Coulson and Ray Wise have an appearance. The latter appears here again in the role of Father Peter Westley, whom he previously played in Psych .

action

Shawn and Gus receive an anonymous email inviting them to the cinnamon festival in the small town of Dual Spiers. Once there, the two are confronted with the mysterious death of the teenager Paula Merral, who has apparently drowned in a lake.

production

The Secret of Dual Spiers is the 75th installment in the Psych series . With a running time of 50 minutes, it is longer than an average episode of the series.

The episode was planned and implemented as a homage to the television series Twin Peaks and contains a number of allusions to this. The main actor James Roday, who calls Twin Peaks his favorite television series and has wanted to implement an episode based on it since the first season , acted as co-writer .

The first broadcast took place exactly 20 years after the first broadcast of the 17th episode of the Twin Peaks series , in which Laura Palmer's murderer was convicted.

Girls Amick and Michael Ontkean were also scheduled to perform, but they did not work together. Amick, however, played a guest role in the subsequent sixth season of Psych .

At first it was planned to offer a role to David Lynch , the director and producer of Twin Peaks . However, the idea was discarded for fear that he would not like the episode and that other actors would jump with him. The actors Kyle MacLachlan and Lara Flynn Boyle , also known from Twin Peaks , were allegedly not considered for an appearance from the outset.

The title song I know you know was interpreted in a slower version by Julee Cruise for the opening credits . The new version is reminiscent of the theme song from the Twin Peaks series, which was also from Cruise . The opening credits have also been changed to resemble that of Twin Peaks .

publication

The Dual Spiers Secret was shown publicly for the first time on November 29, 2010 at the Paley Center For Media in Beverly Hills in the presence of the two main actors James Roday and Dulé Hill as well as Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson and the five guest stars Ray Wise, Robin Lively and Sheryl Lee , Catherine E. Coulson and Lenny Von Dohlen.

The first television broadcast took place on December 1, 2010 on the US cable broadcaster USA Network . It was first broadcast in German on June 13, 2013 on RTL .

reception

According to Nielsen Ratings , 3.543 million viewers saw the episode when it first aired in the United States, about 500,000 more viewers than the previous episode. So far, none of the episodes broadcast later could achieve a higher audience rating.

In Germany, 1.74 million and 8.4 percent of viewers aged three and over saw the episode when it was first broadcast.

Mainly due to the homage to the television series Twin Peaks , The Secret of Dual Spiers is considered to be one of the “most memorable” Psych episodes that drew the greatest media attention. The episode received mixed reviews, with most of the good reviews coming from people already familiar with Twin Peaks .

IGN Entertainment's Jonah Krakow gave it a 9 out of 10 rating, saying that Dual Spiers was "just the weirdest episode of PSYCH , but that's why it's so great." CNN's Katie McLaughlin said Psych was a "damn good tribute to Twin." Peaks ”.

Simon Abrams of the AV Club rated the episode on a scale from A + to F with a C- and called it "sloppy". Even for Brittany Frederick, who didn’t know Twin Peaks before, Dual Spiers was less entertaining than other episodes.
