Bliss is an American adult thriller from 1997 with Sheryl Lee and Craig Sheffer in the lead roles.

action

Mary and Joseph have only been married six months, but already have problems in their marriage that prevent them from having a full sex life. In their attempt to counter this, they turn to the marriage counselor Alfred. Maria, who is dissatisfied with the marriage therapy, gets to know the alternative sex therapist Baltazar, who sleeps with his patients as part of the therapy.

Joseph soon finds out that Maria had also entered into a sexual relationship with Baltazar as part of the therapy. He is initially angry and confronts Baltazar with his anger, but then becomes a patient with him himself.

Maria and Joseph try to improve their sex life with the help of the techniques they have learned in therapy. When Maria has a nervous breakdown and Joseph takes her to the hospital, it is revealed that her problems are related to incestuous sexual abuse suffered by her father as a child. She is encouraged by the therapist to confront the memories of the past in order to cope with her problems.

criticism

The film received mixed reviews. Sheffer's and Lee's performances were criticized by New York Times critic Stephen Holden , who wrote that the cast was unable to sympathize with their yuppie characters. The critic Richard von Busack thought the film was wasting Lee.

The acting performances of Lee and Sheffer were again praised by the critic Jeffrey M. Anderson as extraordinarily complex, strong, physical and fearless. Terence Stamp's performance was unanimously rated as good, albeit in a run-of-the- mill role.
