Mo'Nique (born December 11, 1967 in Woodlawn , Maryland ; born Monique Imes ) is an American actress and Oscar winner.

Life and accomplishments

Mo'Nique made her debut as an actress in the television series The Parkers , in which she appeared from 1999 to 2004. For this role, the African American received the Image Award in the category Best Actress in a Series - Comedy in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005 ; in 2003 she was nominated for the same award. In 2004 she was also nominated for the BET Comedy Award . In the comedy The 10 Rules of Love from 2001, she played alongside Vivica A. Fox , Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union, one of the bigger roles for which she was nominated for another Image Award in 2002. A nomination for this award earned her in 2003 her role in the television comedy Good Fences (2003), in which she appeared on the side of Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg ; in 2004 she received the Black Reel Award for this role .

Her role in the comedy Soul Plane (2004) earned Mo'Nique a second nomination for a BET Comedy Award in 2004 ; she received another one year later for the lead role in the comedy Hair Show (2004). She also played a leading role in the comedy Phat Girlz (2006). In the comedy Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (2008) she appeared on the side of Martin Lawrence .

The climax of her career so far came in 2009 with Lee Daniels ' drama Precious - Life is Precious , with which she had already worked on Shadowboxer in 2005 . In the literary adaptation based on the novel Push by the Afro-American author Sapphire , Mo'Nique took on the supporting role of an unemployed mother who exposes her overweight daughter (played by Gabourey Sidibe ) to psychological and physical violence. The part of Mary earned her numerous awards, including awards from the Los Angeles and New York Film Critics Associations , the Golden Globe , Screen Actors Guild Award , BAFTA Award and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Mo'Nique designed clothing from 2000 to 2002. She married Mark Jackson in 1997, with whom she has one child and from whom she has since been divorced. In 2006 she married the actor Sidney Hicks , with whom she has two children.
