Leslie Jones (born September 7, 1967 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American comedian and actress . She became known through the television series Saturday Night Live for which she was nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series in 2017 and 2018 .

Life

Leslie Jones was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was in the United States Army , so the family moved frequently at first. Jones went to high school in Lynwood , California and attended Chapman and Colorado State Universities on a basketball scholarship. She was undecided about her career choice and changed her majors a few times.

In 1987 Jones started stand-up comedy in college and won the Funniest Person on Campus competition . She quit school and moved to Los Angeles . She performed in clubs and worked in a restaurant and at UPS . After bad reviews and boos from the audience, she was discouraged and did not appear on comedy stages for several years.

She has guest roles in various television series including Dark Angel and The League , as well as supporting roles in films such as Leslie Nielsen Is Very Suspicious and National Security .

In late 2013, she applied to Saturday Night Live and was initially hired as a writer. She was promoted to cast member in October 2014. At 47, she is the oldest person in SNL history to become a member of the show.

In January 2015, it was announced that Leslie Jones would play a leading role alongside Melissa McCarthy , Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon in the reboot of Ghostbusters . The film was released in US cinemas in July 2016. In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
