The 69th Emmy Awards in the Prime Time category (originally: 69th Primetime Emmy Awards ) took place on September 17, 2017 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles ( California ). The nominations were announced on July 13, 2017. Programs that were broadcast in the period from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017 were taken into account. In the United States, the award ceremony was broadcast on CBS . Stephen Colbert moderated the event.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards had previously been presented on September 9 and 10, 2017. They honor television professionals in technical categories such as production design , costumes , camera or editing .

The HBO series Westworld and the NBC comedy show Saturday Night Live received the most nominations, each with 22 nominations, followed by the FX anthology series Feud and the Netflix series Stranger Things (18 nominations each). The most successful was the comedy series Saturday Night Live , which received a total of nine awards after receiving the Creative Arts Emmys and Primetime Emmys, followed by the miniseries Big Little Lies and the drama series The Handmaid's Tale - The Maid's Report (eight wins each). The Handmaid's Tale is the first series of a video-on-demand service ( Hulu ) to win the award for best drama series. Veep - The Vice President was honored for the third time in a row as the best comedy series , while the heroine Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honored as the best comedy leading actress for the sixth time in a row.

Several times during the award ceremony, direct or indirect criticism of the administration of US President Donald Trump was made , during which former press spokesman Sean Spicer made a guest appearance. The consideration of Alec Baldwin , who parodied Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live and was nominated for the award as best supporting actor in comedy , had previously attracted media attention .
