Melanie Thandiwe "Thandie" Newton , OBE (born November 6, 1972 in London ) is a British actress .
life and career
Thandie Newton was born to a Zimbabwean mother (a princess of the Shona ) and a British father. Because of political unrest her family emigrated with her out of the African from the country and moved to England Cornwall .
Later Newton attended London's Art Education School and wanted to become a professional dancer . But a back injury prevented her from doing so. She reoriented and trained as an actor, during which she met the director John Duigan and in 1991 she starred in his film Flirting - Spiel mit der Liebe .
Newton moved to Los Angeles for a short time but returned to Cambridge and earned a university degree in anthropology . In the 1990s she played a few minor film roles. In 1998 she made her breakthrough in Hollywood in the film Human Child.
2000 Newton was cast as the female counterpart to Tom Cruise in the Hollywood production Mission: Impossible 2 . She was also supposed to play one of the three title characters from Charlie's Angels , but lost her role to Lucy Liu because the shooting of Mission: Impossible 2 was extended. In addition to other movies such as Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior (2004), she was also seen in the successful television series Emergency Room in the following years. In the episodrama LA Crash (2004) she played the role of Christine, who is sexually molested by a police officer and later rescued from a burning car wreck by the same man. For her performance in LA Crash , she received the British Academy Film Award in the category "Best Supporting Actress", the Empire Award in the category "Best Actress", the London Critics' Circle Film Award in the category "Best British Supporting Actress", the Black Reel Award in the "Best Acting Ensemble" category, the Screen Actors Guild Award also in the "Best Acting Ensemble" category and has been nominated for four other awards.
Since 2016 she has played the role of prostitute android Maeve Millay on the HBO series Westworld . Her portrayal earned her an Emmy nomination for "Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series" in 2017 . A year later she won the award in the same category for her performance in the second season.
Newton has been married to screenwriter Ol Parker since 1998 and has two daughters (* 2000, * 2004) and a son (* 2014).
