action
The American Regina Lambert, who lives in Paris, spends her vacation in Martinique . There she makes the decision to separate from Charlie, her husband. Upon returning, she learns that Charlie is dead.
Lambert is molested by friends of her dead husband. The American Joshua Peters helps her, but Lambert discovers that the man could have something to do with Charlie's death. Joshua Peters turns out to be a special investigator for the US government, his real name is different. Charlie was murdered by a man who poses as Lewis Bartholomew and is arrested.
background
The Truth About Charlie is a remake of Stanley Donen's classic Charade, starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn . Demme kept the basic constellation of the plot, even took over individual scenes, dialogues and shots almost unchanged. However, it deviated greatly from the original, especially towards the end. He also changed the rather calm narrative style in Charade so that he used handheld cameras and preferred short editing sequences. The Truth About Charlie flopped in the US and never made it to theaters in Germany.
production
The thriller was shot in Martinique and Paris between March 2001 and July 2001.
Reviews
Michael Sragow praised Thandie Newton's game in Baltimore Sun.
Michael Atkinson compared the thriller in The Village Voice to the 1964 thriller Charade , the remake of which was The Truth About Charlie . The new film shows the influence of French cinema.
The lexicon of international film wrote the remake of the comedy thriller Charade take "the unusual cinematic form in itself" and reveal "a precisely composed narrative design" . However, the film "never achieved the charm of the original" and " transformed the web of intrigues and deceptions into superficial confusion" .
Awards
Thandie Newton was nominated for the Black Reel Award and the Image Award in 2003 .
