The Prison of the Lost Girls ( Caged Heat ) is a women's prison film from 1974. It is the first feature film by the American director Jonathan Demme .
action
After being convicted of robbery, Jackie is transferred to a women's prison, where the inmates suffer from the brutal rule of the sadistic, wheelchair-sitting director McQueen. She is wrongly accused of trying to escape and is shocked with electric batons by the prison doctor.
With fellow prisoner Maggie, Jackie manages to steal a car and flee. When they learn that McQueen is about to lobotomize a prisoner , they decide on a rescue. They take the money from a gang of male bank robbers and drive back to the institution in a stolen prison truck. They stop the surgery at the last minute. There is a skirmish with the police, in which McQueen is killed. Jackie and Maggie can escape.
criticism
According to the Monthly Film Bulletin , The Prison of the Lost Girls is the first film of its kind that offers the usual genre elements without them being artificial. “Demme's attempt at a radical exploitation film is somewhat similar to Fassbinder's endeavor to make radical films for a mass audience in a language that can be understood by everyone, and - taking into account fundamental differences between the Hollywood and Munich film industries - The Prison of Lost Girls shares characteristics with you Film like Fassbinder's Martha . ”With self-parodies, the film underlines the absurdity of its own plot. Demme breathed new life into the genre while maintaining a subversive feminist perspective. The lexicon of the international film considered the strip to be a "youthful sin" Demmes.
