action
season 1
After their son and war veteran Matt is murdered in a burglary and his wife Gwen is badly injured, divorced parents Barbara Hanlon and Russ Skokie seek justice for the loss of their son. Matt's in-laws, whose daughter Gwen is in a coma, are also looking for a way to cope with the difficult situation. When the police arrest four suspects, undreamt-of secrets come to light, which put the two families of the victims before further tests. Meanwhile, the suspects and their relatives are fighting against racial discrimination, the American judicial system and the resentment of the victims' families.
season 2
Photos of Anne Blaine's son Taylor, who goes to an expensive private school on a scholarship, appear on social media , apparently showing him under the influence of drugs and alcohol. She then accuses the basketball team of raping their son and reports the incident to the school administration. While the headmistress tries to prevent an impending scandal, the mother seeks help from the police and the media.
season 3
The Hesby family increasingly employs illegal harvest workers on their farms in North Carolina as cheap labor to meet the purchase prices of the supermarkets. One of them is the Mexican Luis Salaza, who illegally entered the United States in search of his runaway son. When several workers are killed in a fire, Jeanette Hesby, one of the daughters-in-law of the farmer family, becomes interested in the working conditions of the harvest workers. Kimara Walters works for a non-governmental organization that cares about the fate of sexually exploited people. Among other things, she helps 17-year-old Shae to escape her pimp . Nicholas Coates, owner of a furniture company, is also struggling with falling prices on the market. His wife Claire hires Gabrielle from Haiti to take care of her son as a nanny and teach him French so she can spend more time with her husband.
Background and production
When nationwide demonstrations against racial discrimination and police arbitrariness broke out in the United States in July 2013, following the acquittal of the accused in the death of Trayvon Martins , ABC entertainment director Paul Lee began to think about a series that thematized contemporary America. In October 2013, ABC finally announced that it was working with John Ridley , the screenwriter of the movie 12 Years a Slave , on a pilot episode for the crime drama American Crime . Without specifying a specific release date, the project was released for production by ABC in early 2014 and the first season was ordered on May 8, 2014.
Elvis Nolasco and Caitlin Gerard were announced as actors for the first season on February 14, 2014 . Other roles were later cast by Timothy Hutton , Penelope Ann Miller , Benito Martinez , W. Earl Brown , Felicity Huffman and Regina King , among others . In November 2014, ABC announced that it would start airing the series on March 5, 2015. In early May 2015, American Crime was extended for a second season. A third season was ordered in May 2016.
American Crime is an anthology series in which each season has a largely constant cast, but a different storyline.
The first season is set in Modesto , California , but was shot in Austin, Texas .
The second season takes place in Indianapolis ( Indiana ) and is based on a comparable event that occurred at Carmel High School in 2010.
For season 3, the location of the action has been relocated to North Carolina and takes place in the city of Greensboro in Guilford County , among other places . However, filming took place in Southern California and South Carolina . The background to this is the lawsuit of several companies, including the Walt Disney Company , to which the television station ABC belongs, against a law passed by North Carolina in March 2016 that discriminates against transgender people. According to the producers, they were not allowed to shoot in North Carolina, although the US state offers little incentive for filmmakers.
