Richard Cabral (born August 28, 1984 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actor . He gained fame primarily through the role of Hector Tontz from the American Crime series , which earned him an Emmy nomination .

Early years

Richard Cabral was born into a second-generation Mexican-American family where he grew up without a father in the East Los Angeles neighborhood, a high-latino neighborhood. He came into contact with street gangs early on, as parts of his family had been in the milieu since the 1970s. At 13, he was sentenced to juvenile detention for stealing a wallet. At 15 he became addicted to the drug crack . He got his GED , so he passed a post-graduation test but still ran into conflict with the law. He was sentenced to prison at 20 for being attacked with a deadly weapon, which he served until he was released at 25. He spent his time outside of prison, away from gang activities, writing lyrics for the lyrics of rap songs, some of which he published under his gang name Baby Jokes . It was also at this time that he became a father for the first time.

After his release, with no prior professional qualifications, friends introduced him to the Homeboy Industries self-help project , which works to prevent gang activity in the greater LA area. There he found a job as a baker, which he pursued during the day and in the evening he took part in his first auditions.

Acting career

He was first seen in front of the camera in 2009 after being cast in a small role in the series Southland . By 2011 he starred in four other episodes of the series. In 2010 he had a role in the music video for Bruno Mars ' single Grenade . He subsequently appeared in guest roles in the series Body of Proof , Luck , Chicago Fire and Bosch . In 2013 he was in the action thriller Snitch as Flaco in a small role. Other film roles followed in The Counselor , Paranormal Activity: The Drawn , Blood Father and as Duncan in Breaking In .

In 2015 he was cast in the anthology series American Crime in the role of Hector Tontz . For his performance he received in the same year was nominated for an Emmy in the category Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie . He also received a nomination in this category for the OFTA Television Award . He was also part of the cast of the anthology series in 2016 as Sebastian De La Torre and in 2017 as Isaac Castillo . From 2016 to 2017 he also appeared as Alejandro Cruz in Lethal Weapon .

Since 2018, Cabral has played a leading role as Johnny 'Coco' Cruz in the series Mayans MC , which is a spin-off from the series Sons of Anarchy . In 2019 he received a Critics Choice Awards nomination for the role for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series .

Cabral was married twice. From 2014 with the actress Janiece Sarduy. The marriage lasted two years. He is the father of four children. He and his last wife have two daughters, Adalyn and Bella.
