development

The creator of Sons of Anarchy , Kurt Sutter , had already announced the idea of a spin-off in August 2015 that would focus on the Mayans. In May 2016 it was said that the American broadcaster FX had ordered the script for a pilot episode about the Latino biker gang, and in early December 2016 the shooting of the pilot episode was commissioned. Production and shooting were scheduled for March 2017. Actors were Jacqueline Obradors , John Ortiz , Sarah Bolger , Raymond Cruz and Maurice Compte , Edward James Olmos and JD Pardo in the leading roles.

After FX turned down director Elgin James' first pilot episode in July 2017 , the spin-off was rewritten and re-cast. The original co-director Norberto Barba now acted as director and executive producer of the new pilot version, in which at least part of the original cast was retained. Franchise creator Kurt Sutter stayed on board as an author.

On October 20, Kurt Sutter confirmed that filming had begun on the second pilot version, with Danny Pino , Raoul Trujillo , Michael Irby , Richard Cabral and Carla Baretta, among others, signed for the main cast .

In January 2018, FX gave the series the green light for the production of a ten-part first season, which will follow directly on from the end of Sons of Anarchy .

In October 2018, FX ordered a second season of the series. Even before the broadcast, series inventor Kurt Sutter announced that he was leaving the series. The second season has aired in the US since September 3, 2019.

On November 6, 2019, FX confirmed that the series will be expanded to include a third season and that it will air in the fall of 2020. Despite the quarrels behind the scenes (Kurt Sutter was fired as showrunner and Elgin James is now taking over), Mayan's MC was the most successful series on American cable / pay TV.
