Emilio Rivera (born February 24, 1961 in San Antonio , Texas ) is an American actor and stand-up comedian of Mexican origin. He gained fame primarily through the role of Marcus Álvarez from the series Sons of Anarchy and the spin-off Mayans MC .

life and career

Emilio Rivera was born as one of seven children, four sons and three daughters, in the Texan city of San Antonio. He then grew up in the Elysian Valley , Los Angeles . His childhood, also known as Frogtown , was not always easy. This also includes his experiences with street gangs and drug use. His first contact with acting was in the third grade, when he took part in a school performance of Rumpelstiltskin . After graduating from school in 1979, he was drafted into the US Army. After that, he initially had a hard time gaining a foothold in the acting business and therefore began his career in the theater.

He took on his first role in front of the camera in 1992 with a guest appearance in the series Renegade - Merciless Hunt . Further appearances on television soon followed in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. , Beverly Hills, 90210 and JAG - On behalf of honor . He took his first film roles in My Family , Cable Guy and Con Air . Between 1995 and 1996 he played a small role in the daily soap Reich und Schön . He then appeared in Walker, Texas Ranger , The X Files - The FBI's Scary Cases , New York Cops - NYPD Blue , Emergency Room - The Emergency Room , The Shield - Law of Violence , CSI: Vegas , Kojak , Bones - The Bone Hunter and My Name Is Earl in guest roles.

In 2003 he took on a small role in Bruce Almighty . In 2004 he appeared in the comedy film Wedding Bells . In 2007 he played a cop in Spider-Man 3 . In 2009 he was seen as a bodega in the comedy Delivery with Obstacles with Donald Faison . He played the role of Sanchez in the action film Act of Valor . From 2008 to 2014 he played the supporting role of Marcus Álvarez in the series Sons of Anarchy . In this supporting role he can be seen in the spin-off Mayans MC since 2018 . In 2014 he appeared as Tio Gordo in a recurring role in the series Gang Related . From 2015 to 2016 he was seen as Hector "Escorpion" Alvarez in a supporting role in Z Nation . In 2018 he appeared in the films Don't Worry, You Can't Run Away and Venom on. Also from 2018 he was seen in the series The Family Business and On My Block .

Since the beginning of his career, Rivera has appeared in more than 120 film and television productions. The preferred role profile for which he is frequently filled are primarily criminals or law enforcement officers. As a performer, he also appeared in some music videos, such as 50 Cent and Nicki Minaj .

Personal

Rivera has been married to Yadi Valerio for the second time since 2009. He has three children with his first wife. The marriage fell apart because of Rivera's drug problems. He's been completely clean since withdrawal. His fighting skills earned him the nickname Lefty in childhood due to his tough left hand .
