Act of Valor is an American action film by Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh from the year 2012 . The film shows a fictional story based on real operations, including the surviving shot in the eye of a SEAL and the rescue of an undercover CIA agent. The soldiers of the United States Navy SEALs are represented by real SEALs as well as members of the SWCC who are still on active duty. The US government gave permission for members of the armed forces to attend on condition that their full names were not disclosed and their identities would not be revealed. During the shoot, the working title I Am That Man was chosen.

action

In the Philippines , an attack is carried out in an international school in Manila by means of an IED , in which the American ambassador, his son and many other children are killed. The Islamist terrorist Abu Shabal, who comes from Chechnya, is responsible for this . This goes to an Indonesian terror camp .

In Costa Rica is the CIA agent Lisa Morales, who is supposed to prove the connection between the drug and arms dealer Christo and Abu Shabal in an undercover mission. But she is exposed, kidnapped and tortured by Christo's entourage. Then a unit of the United States Navy SEALs under the command of Lieutenant Rorke, whose wife is pregnant, is tasked with the rescue of the agent. The SEALs are dropped off near Christos Camp and kill his men in a disciplined, professional and noiseless manner. When they free Agent Morales, soldier Mikey is shot at and loses an eye.

In the meantime, Abu Shabal has obtained special explosive vests. These are each filled with 500 ceramic balls, cannot be located by any metal detector and cause devastating damage when detonated. He is planning a terrible terrorist attack on various US cities using suicide bombers. Christo is responsible for smuggling the terrorists into the USA.

The same SEALs unit is now being ordered to Somalia , as this is where the delivery of the explosives takes place. Before the mission, Rorke gives Dave a letter in case something should happen to him. In Somalia, the soldiers discover two planes taking off with the deadly cargo for Mexico . Meanwhile, another unit in the South Pacific overwhelms Christo on his yacht. During the interrogation he confesses the planned terrorist act, but can no longer stop it. Lieutenant Rorke's unit then storms a Mexican village and finds some explosive vests, but the assassins are already on their way to the Mexican border town of Mexicali . This city is ruled by the drug cartel and provides illegal tunnel access to the United States.

Once there, Rorke and his men are involved in heavy firefights, but can fight their way up to just before the tunnel. A terrorist throws a grenade into the closed room where the soldiers are. Rorke heroically throws himself on the grenade to save his comrade's life. His body dampens the explosion considerably, but this action costs him his life. Abu Shabal and the assassins can all be killed.

Lieutenant Rorke Engel is buried with full military honors. The letter he gave Dave is for his unborn child.

background

production

US Navy SEALs while filming the yacht

The film was shot in several states in the United States. In California , recordings were made in El Centro , in San Diego , on San Clemente Island and in the Mojave Desert . In Florida , the film was shot in Key West ; in Mississippi , recordings were made at the John C. Stennis Space Center . Further recordings were made in Mexicali , Mexico, as well as in the Philippines , Cambodia , Puerto Rico and Ukraine . The film crew visited training facilities of the United States Navy , including the base of a drug cartel, a terrorist training camp on a desert island and a smuggler's yacht, in order to be able to stage the film as realistically as possible on suitable film sets. Live ammunition was used in some scenes to further increase the realism of the footage. In contrast, the torture scene was defused so that a "Hollywood" scene was filmed here instead of staging a far more drastic, realistic representation based on the experience of the SEALs, which would have led to an undesirable X-Rating age approval. Even with the scene in which an anti-tank missile is fired at one of the SEALs, the filmmakers tried to achieve a realistic representation, because such weapons usually detonate only after a certain number of revolutions for safety reasons, in order to accidentally detonate near the shooter to avoid. Channing Moss , a former United States Army soldier , survived an attack with such a weapon in Afghanistan on March 16, 2006, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart . The scene in which the SEAL throws himself on a hand grenade to save his comrades is based on Michael Anthony Monsoor , Petty Officer Second Class of the United States Navy SEALs , who sacrificed himself in this way on September 29, 2006 in Ramadi to save several comrades and Iraqi soldiers and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for this. The operational cycles of the SEALs were due to the fact that the main shooting lasted two and a half years.

Reviews

"Banal action film as a blatant advertisement for an elite unit of the US Army, which creates repulsive and highly threatening scenarios in order to justify the ruthless use of the Seals without critical questioning."

“Navy SEALs are US elite soldiers who carry out particularly difficult missions, such as last year's secret mission in Pakistan that led to Osama bin Laden's death. For their directorial debut, the two former stunt men Scott Waugh and Mike McCoy give an insight into the hard-nosed world of these military superheroes. The novice directors wanted to portray their protagonists as authentically as possible and therefore came to the conclusion that this would only be possible with real SEALs. In addition, the story by screenwriter Kurt Johnstad (' 300 ') is laid out as a docudrama, but the authenticity is diminished by the decision to interweave various missions for the film following Hollywood conventions.
