Katey Sagal (actually Catherine Louise Sagal ; born January 19, 1954 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actress , voice actress and singer . In German-speaking countries, she was mainly known for her roles as Peggy Bundy in the television series A Terrible Nice Family , as Cate Hennessy in Meine wilden Töchter and as Gemma Teller Morrow in the television series Sons of Anarchy .

Life

Katey Sagal comes from a family of well-known filmmakers. Her mother Sara Zwilling was initially an assistant director and singer before she made a name for herself as a director. Her father Boris Sagal , a Russian Jewish immigrant , was a well-known film director ( The Omega Man , The Twilight Zone ) . Her younger twin sisters Liz and Jean, who are known from the television series Double Trouble , are also actors, like their younger brother Joe.

Sagal took singing lessons at the age of five. She aspired to a career as a singer, but occasionally appeared as a supporting actress in film productions in the 1970s, including in an episode of the Columbo film series directed by her father. She later worked as a background singer for artists such as Bob Dylan , Olivia Newton-John , Gene Simmons and Etta James . As a member of the group "The Harlettes", a band around Bette Midler , she went on tour with the artist in 1979 before she broke away from the formation in an argument. From then on she pursued solo projects and appeared in nightclubs around Los Angeles with self-written texts and her own show program.

In 1985 she resumed acting in the neglected television series Mary , in which she was offered a small supporting role. In addition, she accepted an offer from the Los Angeles Theater Company for the rock musical Backstreet , which contractually guaranteed her a say in the choreography and the lyrics. A casting agency became aware of her during a performance of the musical. She got an invitation to audition for the role of Peggy Bundy on A Terribly Nice Family , which eventually beat about 1200 actresses. With this role she achieved international fame.

In 1991 Sagal got pregnant - unexpectedly for the producers of A Terribly Nice Family , so the pregnancy was written into the sixth season storyline. In October 1991 she had a caesarean section in the 7th month , which resulted in her daughter being stillborn . In the series, the pregnancy was then declared as a dream of her husband . Two later pregnancies of hers were no longer included in the story of the series.

In 1999 she played the alcoholic Edna , mother of Steven Hyde, in some episodes of The Wild Seventies . She also spoke the original voice of Turanga Leela in the series Futurama . From 2002 to 2005 she played Cate Hennessy in the ABC - sitcom Simple Rules - until his death in 2003 alongside John Ritter .

On October 2, 2004, Sagal married for the third time. With her current husband, the film producer and actor Kurt Sutter , she has a daughter (* 2007), carried by a surrogate mother. There are also two children from a previous marriage.
