action

In the early 14th century, the Welsh warrior Wilkin Brattle fought for the army of King Edward II of England. After a vision, Wilkin puts down his sword and wants to live as a farmer from now on. Wilkin gets married and they are expecting a child. However, the high taxes make his life almost unbearable. Therefore, Wilkin, under pressure from the citizens of the village, carries out an attack on Baron Ventris. In revenge, he burns the village down and kills all women and children. Only Wilkin's wife Petra is spared by the soldiers.

characters

main characters

Wilkin Brattle: A Welsh warrior who, after a particularly brutal fight, lying badly injured on the battlefield, receives a divine message from a child who appears in a vision and then takes a vow and lays down his sword. Wilkin actually wants to try to live as a farmer with his wife from now on, but he is soon forced to raise his sword again and becomes the executioner and executioner of the oppressors; he becomes a punisher and a bastard executioner . This task is far bloodier than the one he fulfilled as a warrior, and Wilkin finds himself in a moral dilemma trying to save his life and home. He has to torture people in order to get what he wants and is also not afraid to use the skin of his victims as scrolls to emphasize his messages.

Annora of the Alders: A mysterious Slavic healer who studies the black arts and believes Wilkin will achieve great things. Annora believes in his visions because she once heard the same voice as Wilkin on the battlefield. She serves Wilkin as an advisor, but also tries to manipulate him and use him for her own purposes.

Toran Prichard: Wilkin's closest friend is a strong and cynical Welsh farmer. He is always loyal to his compatriots and he is ready to fight to protect them from any form of exploitation. Toran is the husband of Eva Prichard and father of Rhys Prichard.

Baroness Lowry 'Love' Aberffraw Ventris: The Welsh noblewoman Lady Love is so beautiful, polite and has great sympathy for her compatriots, which often brings her into conflict because of her noble origins. Lady Love is the feudal lord of Ventrishire.

Milus Corbett: Baron Ventris' clever and ambitious right hand ensures sent that the country's laws will be implemented and the eunuch (Chamberlain) of the Baron and his closest adviser and strategist. Milus Corbett becomes Lady Love's advisor after the Baron's death.

Isabel Kiffin: The shy and innocent Isabel was the playmate of Lady Love in her childhood, is therefore like a sister to her and later becomes her personal servant and loyal confidante.

Jessamy Maddox: She was abused by her relentless husband, former executioner Gawain, and she only endured it by twisting fantasy and reality.

Luca Maddox: son of Gawain Maddox.

Petra Brattle: Wilkin's wife is spared by Ventris' soldiers who burn down the village and gives birth to a child in the midst of the inferno.

Minor characters

Ludwig Von Zettel: Known as The Dark Mute

Erik Ventris: The Baron of Castle Ventris is the husband of Lady Love and is killed by Toran.

Filming

The filming took place in Wales and thus the location of the series. In the village of Llanharan , northwest of Cardiff , a special setting was built with a village and a castle, which was completed in March 2015. The final battle at the end of the first season took place near Mount Snowdon . Buildings from the early Middle Ages, such as the Norman Keep des Cardiff Castle, can be found in the immediate vicinity of the main filming location.

occupation

Main cast

Until then only a small role as a voice actor in animation series Magical Tales known Lee Jones was hired for the role of Wilkin Brattle. Kurt Sutter and his wife Katey Sagal , with whom he has been married since 2004, played the role of Annora of the Alders . Director Kurt Sutter himself can be seen in the role of The Dark Mute.

Supporting cast

Actor Matthew Rhys , who plays Gruffudd y Blaidd in the series, is a native of Welsh. The singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran has taken on the role of Sir Cormac in five episodes.

reception

Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter says, “ The Bastard Executioner tries to tell a very big story and take the audience on an epic journey. [...] The cast is large, strong and has sufficiently finely appointed characters that the series does not lose its power even in the lengthy storylines. As the main character, Lee Jones has the gift of guiding the audience through the series and manages to pull them under its spell until they understand what the series is all about. Even if it is difficult for the viewer to get into the plot at the beginning, he will gain clarity about the story by the end of the second episode at the latest. "

Maureen Ryan of the Huffington Post , on the other hand, does not appear to be captivated by the series: “Aside from the moments when Stephen Moyer and a few supporting cast are on-screen, the series fails to ignite in any memorable or meaningful way . ”James Poniewozik of The New York Times notes that some of the show looks almost like a medieval market compared to Game of Thrones .
