Political career
From 2001 to 2005 he was an advisor to the FrP group in the Norwegian parliament, the Storting . Between 2004 and 2005 he was chairman of his party in Oslo . Solvik-Olsen moved into Storting for the first time in 2005. There he represented the province of Rogaland for two legislative terms until 2013 . During this time he mainly dealt with energy and financial policy. Between October 2009 and September 2013 he was a member of his party's parliamentary group. From October 2011 to September 2013 he was also first deputy chairman of the finance committee. Both in the 2013 election and in the 2017 Storting election , he was only a Vararepresentant , i.e. only a potential successor to parliament. For private reasons he had decided not to be nominated to a higher position on the list. At the same time, he also criticized the fact that the discussions in parliament were unrealistic.
On May 26, 2013 he became the second deputy chairman of the FrP. In April 2019, he did not stand for re-election.
In the Solberg government , he was Minister for Transport and Communications from October 16, 2013 to August 31, 2018 . He retired from office for private reasons. His wife had accepted a job offer in Alabama .
Political positions
Solvik-Olsen has often appeared as a proponent of energy generation from thorium . After the reactor accident in Fukushima , in contrast to the politicians of the Sosialistisk Venstreparti (SV), he did not rely on the closure of the Norwegian nuclear power plants , but on the development of nuclear power plants that use the element thorium instead of uranium .
In terms of transport policy, he advocates that the road infrastructure is financed by taxpayers' money instead of tolls.
