Social economy as an interdisciplinary science

Social economy tries to understand the interactions between society , economy , economy and politics . Socio-economic research and science deals with and answers sociological and economic questions in an interdisciplinary manner from different perspectives. It deals with economic activity in its social context and with the respective relationship to other social, political, demographic, ecological and spatial processes. Socio-economic research and teaching historically refers to Karl Marx , Max Weber , Émile Durkheim , Joseph Schumpeter , Karl Polanyi , Pierre Bourdieu , Reinhard Schultz, Günter Schmölders , Werner Hofmann , Manfred Schweres and Alfred Oppolzer as well as current representatives of the economic , legal and social sciences . So far it is not a highly specialized individual discipline, but rather a common perspective of several disciplines that cooperate in research and teaching in order to better understand, describe and explain social, economic and political reality.

Purpose of the social economy

According to the sociologist Alfred Oppolzer , the necessity of social economy is challenged from the various individual disciplines, for example from business administration (Reinhard Schultz, 1988), also from economics ( Günter Schmölders , 1973) and political economy ( Werner Hofmann , 1969) from sociology ( Max Weber , 1904) as well as from ergonomics (Manfred Schweres, 1980; Alfred Oppolzer, 1989). Oppolzer states that social economy is:

  1. the "investigation of the interactions between economy and society",
  2. the "practical relevance of the question" and
  3. the "interdisciplinary approach".

The economic and social historian Ernst Langthaler assumes that in the socio-economic perspective:

  • The economy is seen in social contexts,
  • the focus is on the networking of actors and collectives ,
  • Power imbalances between actors are examined as well
  • an attempt is made to understand behavior and to develop it.

Like Oppolzer, Langthaler refers to Karl Marx (economics, sociology), Max Weber (sociology, economics), Émile Durkheim (sociology), Joseph Schumpeter (economics), Karl Polanyi (cultural anthropology, sociology), Pierre Bourdieu (sociology).

Günter Schmölders made another step with socio-economic behavior research . In 1958 he founded the Research Center for Empirical Social Economics. From the legal sciences , the labor and constitutional lawyer Otto Ernst Kempen, former director of the Academy of Labor, and the business lawyer Udo Reifner as founder of the Institute for Financial Services should be mentioned. Harry Friebel made an important contribution to the socio-economic consideration of educational and socialization theory with the Hamburg biography and résumé panel "The Children of Educational Expansion ". The International Institute for Empirical Social Economy shows an economic sociological approach.

Study of social economy

The undergraduate degree in social economics conveys basic scientific knowledge in business administration, economics, sociology and law and leads to a first professional university degree.

  • The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel has been offering a bachelor's degree in Socio-Economics (B.Sc.) since the 2015/16 winter semester . The course offers an almost complete integration of the study of economics, sociology and political science, in which all essential traditional components of B.Sc. courses are represented in the three subject areas and thus the core competencies in the economic or social science area are maintained.
  • From the 2016/17 winter semester, there will be a new course at the University of Siegen , "Plural Economics", which "discusses and examines economic phenomena with a variety of different approaches ...". In addition, "is characterized by the discourse of alternative thought traditions" and "aims at students who critically reflect on their own economic understanding and want to leave the usual ways of thinking. Through his critical examination of several specialist areas - including economics and business administration, ethics , Law, Ecology, History and Sociology - the course is in line with some guiding values of socio-economics, although it is specifically related to plural economics . An essential core element of this last tradition is a critical examination of the neoclassical model of economics.

The graduate social economist could be acquired through interdisciplinary studies at universities and technical colleges , but also at vocational academies (BA). The diploma courses are gradually being replaced by Bachelor and Master courses. At the University of Göttingen in the form of polyvalent Bachelor and Master degrees. After completion of the appointment process for three new professorships, the Institute for Socio-Economics will strengthen the research profile of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen and offer its own Master’s degree in Socio-Economics (as of November 2, 2017).

Social economist as a profession

According to the profession of the Federal Employment Agency, social economists and social economists take on administrative or management tasks in organizational planning and control and are primarily employed in social and health care institutions, in public administration, in companies in the social and health care sector and in interest groups , Associations and organizations. In addition, also in personnel and organizational development in companies in almost all sectors of the economy as well as in opinion research institutes.

Business administration and management in the social field and in the health sector

Social economics is also used as business administration and management in the social field as well as in health care . An example of this is the degree in health and social economics ( diploma ) at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences . Social pedagogy and social economics were also taught in Bremen . The Wuppertal Administration and Business Academy offers part-time studies to become a health and social economist (VWA). The Esslingen University master degree program Social Economy .

Synonymous with social economics

Social economics found dissemination in German-speaking countries with the interdisciplinary texts by Max Weber . In particular with "Grundriss der Sozialökonomik" Weber developed the foundations of social economics, alongside Karl Marx and Karl Polanyi . Max Weber's " Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft " was published posthumously in 1922 by his wife Marianne Weber . Social economics has also been used as a term for national economy for decades . Social economics is increasingly gaining acceptance as a term for the doctrine of "social economy". This includes, among other things, the socio-economic behavior research according to Günter Schmölders .

Synonymous with socioeconomics

According to the sociologist Andrea Maurer in the Gabler Wirtschaftslexikon, socio-economics got its name from the older German term “social economics” ( Weber 1985/1920; Schumpeter 1987) and is now also referred to as “ social economics ” or “social economics” (Perridon and Granvogl 2000; cf. . on the history of concepts in detail Oppolzer 1990).

According to Maurer's entry in the economic encyclopedia , socio- economics stands for a research program that aims to explain economic activity as well as the core institutions and structures of the modern economy not only from an "economic" point of view and with exclusive consideration of economic factors. Rather, the common concern of socio-economists is to locate economies and economic activities in their societal conditions and therefore to focus on the interplay between economy and society.

Synonymous with economics

Historically, social economy is also used as a synonym for economics and political economy . According to the Duden spelling dictionary , social economics is a science that deals with the entire economy of a society.

Synonymous with economic sociology

Historically, social economy is also used as a term for economic sociology . Like social economics, economic sociology refers to Max Weber , Karl Marx and Karl Polanyi . In the process of separating economics and sociology in the first half of the 20th century, economic sociology as a sub-discipline or hyphenated sociology lost its influence. The new economic sociology, in the USA since the 1980s, understands economic action as social action that takes place embedded in a social context.

The economic sociology section of the German Society for Sociology (DGS) aims to institutionalize research and teaching in economic sociology in Germany and promote scientific exchange in this area.

Applied social and economic policy

Applied social and economic policy is also summarized under the term social economy. This starts with social policy , through state social benefits to the public or private social economy . Social economic activity in the non-profit sector includes both economic and social aspects. "The social economy not only pursues purely economic goals, but also social, environmental and ethical goals," said the regional authority of the German-speaking Community of Belgium .

Market economy without capitalism

The Foundation for the Reform of Monetary and Land Regulations and their affiliated publishing house for social economy refer to Silvio Gesell in their ideas for a different monetary and land regime with the aim of a market economy without capitalism . The journal for social economy is close to free economics .
