Sveinung Rotevatn (born May 15, 1987 in Bergen ) is a Norwegian lawyer and politician of the social liberal party Venstre . From 2013 to 2017 he was a Member of Parliament in Storting , from January 2018 to January 2020 he was State Secretary . He has been climate and environment minister in the Solberg government since January 2020 .

Life

education

While in school, Rotevatn spent a year abroad in Canada , where he attended the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in Lethbridge . He holds a master's degree in law from the University of Bergen , which he received in 2018.

Political career

From 2010 to 2013 Rotevatn headed the youth organization Unge Venstre , after having been its deputy chairman from 2009. Between 2011 and 2013 he sat in the local parliament of the former Eid municipality . In the 2013 parliamentary elections , he entered the Norwegian national parliament in Storting for the constituency of Sogn og Fjordane , where he had a mandate until 2017 and was a member of the Labor and Social Committee.

On January 17, 2018, he became State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and Readiness, where he served under the Fremskrittspartiet politicians Sylvi Listhaug and later Tor Mikkel Wara . On October 12, 2018, he moved as State Secretary to the Climate and Environment Ministry headed by his party colleague Ola Elvestuen . On January 24, 2020, after the Fremskrittspartiet (FrP) left government and the resulting cabinet reshuffle, he became the new climate and environment minister.

On March 5, 2020, he was proposed by the party leadership as the first deputy chairman of his party. A party conference in April 2020 should have confirmed him in this position. After party leader Trine Skei Grande announced her resignation, however, he announced his candidacy for the party chairmanship at the end of May 2020. In August 2020, the election committee finally proposed him again as the first deputy, with Guri Melby as chairman.

Positions

Rotevatn is one of the proponents of Norway joining the EU . He is also one of the politicians who campaign for the abolition of the Norwegian royal family . He justifies this position with the fact that in a modern state no positions should be inherited.
