Torbjørn Røe Isaksen (born July 28, 1978 in Ålesund ) is a Norwegian politician of the conservative party Høyre . From October 2013 to January 2018 he was the education minister and then the economics minister of his country until January 2020. Since January 2020 he has been the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the Solberg government . Between 2009 and 2017 he was a member of parliament in Storting .

Life

Isaksen, who worked as a freelance journalist in Porsgrunn from 1996 to 2002 , studied political science at the University of Oslo between 1999 and 2008 , where he obtained a master’s degree . From 2004 to 2008 he was chairman of Unge Høyre , his party's youth organization.

From 1999 to 2003 and between 2008 and 2011 Torbjørn Røe Isaksen sat in the local parliament of Porsgrunn. In the parliamentary elections in 2009 , he entered the Norwegian national parliament in Storting for the first time . There he represented the constituency of Telemark and he became a member of the labor and social committee. In the 2013 election he received another mandate, but he was represented by Solveig Sundbø Abrahamsen from October 2013 , as he had to suspend his mandate as a member of the government.

On October 16, 2013, Isaksen was appointed Minister of Education in the Solberg government. On January 17, 2018, he became Minister of Economics in the Solberg government, which was partially re-formed after the Venstre party had entered government. After the Fremskrittspartiet (FrP) left the government , he took over the office of Minister of Labor and Social Affairs from fellow party colleague Anniken Hauglie on January 24, 2020 in the newly rebuilt government. Due to the resignation of Minister of Fisheries Geir Inge Sivertsen , Isaksen was also appointed acting Minister of Fisheries from March 2, 2020 to March 13.

On May 27, 2020, he announced that he did not want to run for a seat in Storting in the 2021 parliamentary election . He also stated that he wanted to leave top politics after the election.
