Terje Søviknes (born February 28, 1969 ) is a Norwegian politician of the Fremskrittspartiet (FrP). From December 2016 to August 2018 he was the Minister for Oil and Energy in his country, and from December 2019 to January 2020 he was the Minister for Seniors and Public Health in his country.

Life

From 1995 to 2003 Søviknes was a member of the Parliament of Hordaland Province . From 1999 to 2016 and again from 2018 to 2019 he was mayor of the municipality of Os . Søviknes was the first FrP politician to be elected mayor. In the local elections in September 2019, he failed to become mayor of the newly founded Bjørnafjorden municipality .

From 1999 to 2001 he was deputy chairman of his party and was considered by the press as a possible successor to Carl I. Hagen , but he resigned from all offices at state level in 2001 after sexual contact with a minor at an event organized by the youth organization FpU became known .

His suggestion to have the "costs" calculated for the immigrants immediately sparked criticism.

He was a member of the Solberg government from December 20, 2016 to August 31, 2018 as Minister of Oil and Energy . In May 2019 he was re-elected as second deputy party chairman of the FrP. On December 18, 2019, he returned to the government as Minister for Seniors and Public Health. His party had wanted him to return so that all the politicians in the party leadership would also be involved in the government. He resigned from his new office on January 24, 2020, as the FrP had to leave the government .
