Trine Skei Grande (born October 2, 1969 in Overhalla ) is a Norwegian politician and has been the leader of the social liberal party Venstre since 2010 . From January 2018 to January 2020 she was Minister of Culture in the Solberg government , and from January 2020 to March 2020 she held the office of Minister of Education and Integration. On March 11, 2020, she announced her resignation from her positions.

Political career

From 1987 to 1989 she was chairman of the youth party Unge Venstre in Nord-Trøndelag . Since 1990 she has been a member of the Venstre party executive. Between 1997 and 2000 she led her party in the city of Oslo. In 2000 she was elected deputy chairman and has been the party chairman since 2010.

Grande was a member of the Fylkesting in what was then the province of Nord-Trøndelag between 1991 and 1995 . From 1997 to 2003 she was a member of the Oslo City Council. She has been a representative for Oslo since 2001 and has been a member of the Storting in various committees. Between 2001 and 2005 and between 2009 and 2018 she was the parliamentary group leader of her party. In 2015, she and the Social Democratic MP Marit Nybakk boycotted a trip by the Foreign Affairs Committee to Iran because she did not agree to having to wear headgear.

Minister

Following the parliamentary elections in autumn 2017 , Grande was appointed Minister of Culture in January 2018. With the participation of the Christian Democrat Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF) in the government, the gender equality department was transferred from the KrF-led Ministry for Children and Family to Grandes' area of ​​responsibility. On January 24, 2020, she moved to the Ministry of Education and Integration after a major cabinet reshuffle after the Fremskrittspartiet (FrP) left government .

On March 5, 2020, the Venstre Party's electoral committee declared that Grande should remain party leader. This happened after long internal party disputes and the party executive boards in several provinces asked Grande to resign. She should have been elected chairwoman at a party conference in April. On March 11, Grande announced her decision to withdraw from re-election as party leader. She will also resign from the government and will no longer run in the 2021 general election. On March 13, 2020, Guri Melby was introduced as her successor to the ministerial post. However, since the party congress had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , she will remain party chairman.
