Monica Mæland (born February 6, 1968 in Bergen ) is a Norwegian politician of the conservative party Høyre . From October 2013 to January 2018 she was Minister of Economic Affairs, then Minister for Municipalities and Modernization until January 2020. Since January 2020 she has been the Minister of Justice in the Solberg government .

Origin and education

Mæland grew up in Arendal and attended grammar school there until 1987. In 1987 she began studying law at the University of Bergen , where she was a member of the student parliament in 1989 and 1990. She finished her studies in 1994. She then worked as a lawyer until 1999.

Political career

From 1985 to 1986 Mæland headed the youth organization Unge Høyre in Aust-Agder, after which she was deputy chairman until 1988. Between 1997 and 2002 she held the post of deputy party leader of her party in the province of Hordaland and until 2004 that of the first party leader. From 2010 to 2014 she was a member of the Høyre party executive at the state level.

From 1999 to 2003 Mæland was a member of the local parliament in Bergen . In 2003 she became chairwoman of the city government of Bergen, the Byråd . She held this office until 2013. On October 16, 2013, she was appointed Minister of Economy of Norway, and on January 17, 2018, she moved to the Ministry of Municipalities and Modernization. After the Fremskrittspartiet (FrP) left government , she took over the post of Justice Minister from FrP politician Jøran Kallmyr on January 24, 2020 .
