Chicago Fire is an American drama - television series with Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney in the lead roles. It was designed by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas and has been produced by Universal Television in collaboration with Wolf Films for the US broadcaster NBC since 2012 . The focus of the series, the men and women are firefighters from Chicago , the Chicago Fire Department .

The first broadcast in the United States was on October 10, 2012. On May 10, 2017 NBC extended the series together with its offshoots Chicago PD and Chicago Med for a sixth season, while the third offshoot Chicago Justice was discontinued after only one season. The series belong to the series universe of Law & Order .

In February 2019, NBC extended the series for an eighth season. In February 2020, three more seasons, up to and including season 11, were ordered.

action

The firefighters in the Firehouse 51 department of Chicago face stress and danger on a daily basis. These situations primarily affect their private life. Matthew Casey, head of turntable ladder 81 (Truck 81) , is initially in the middle of a separation from his fiancée and seeks distraction in his work. Fireman Christopher Herrmann also had personal problems at the beginning of the series, so he had to watch his house being foreclosed. When a firefighter has a fatal accident, Matthew has to mess with Kelly Severide, head of Rescue Squad 3 . Even so, the Department is a surrogate family for most of them.

Production and broadcast

United States

In January 2012, NBC secured the rights to Dick Wolf's action pilots and announced the production of a pilot episode . After viewing the pilot episode, the broadcaster gave the green light in May 2012 and initially ordered 13 episodes for the first season. It premiered on October 10, 2012 following Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on NBC.

The pilot episode was seen by 6.61 million viewers, with a target audience rating of 1.9. The series lost a few viewers over the next few weeks, before earning its top audience rating of 7.03 million with its fourth episode. After that, however, Chicago Fire lost viewers again. Despite this drop in ratings, NBC announced the production of nine more episodes in early November. Until the beginning of February, two more episodes were ordered for the first season, so that this comes to 24 episodes. The first season finale, which aired on May 22, 2013, was designed as a backdoor pilot for the Chicago PD spin-off via the Chicago Police Department.

At the end of April 2013, the series was extended by a second season with 22 episodes. The broadcast of the second season began on September 24, 2013 and ended on May 13, 2014.

The second season viewer numbers rose by 35% to an average of 10.6 million, with a target group rating of 3.1. In March 2014, the series was extended for a third season. The first episode of the third season aired in the United States on September 23, 2014. In February 2015, NBC extended the series for a fourth season. In November 2015, NBC ordered a fifth season, which aired October 11, 2016. Seasons 6 and 7 followed; in February 2019, NBC extended the series for the eighth season.

Germany

The first broadcast on German-language television has been on the pay-TV broadcaster Universal Channel since September 5, 2013 . The first season was broadcast in double episodes and with the original sound option from September 5 to November 21, 2013. The second season was also broadcast in double episodes from June 12 to August 21, 2014. The third season was broadcast from April 8, 2015 to August 26, 2015. The fourth season aired from March 15 to May 17, 2016. The fifth season aired on Universal Channel from March 6, 2017 to July 31, 2017. The sixth season aired from March 19 to August 20, 2018. The seventh season was broadcast for the first time from March 4 to July 29, 2019.

The series has been running on German free TV since June 16, 2014 on the private broadcaster VOX . The sixth season last ran until November 2018.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the first broadcast has been on German - language free -to- air television since March 24, 2014 .

On Swiss television (SRFZwei channel), the first season was broadcast from March 24 to June 9, 2014 and the second season from January 5 to March 23, 2015. The third season was broadcast from September 14, 2015 to January 11, 2016.

Austria

In Austria, the first season of the series was broadcast on the free TV channel Puls 4 from May 26 to August 11, 2014 on Mondays, also in double episodes.

Offshoot

Chicago PD

In March 2013, NBC announced plans for a planned branch of Chicago Fire through the Chicago Police Department. The offshoot was developed by Dick Wolf and produced by his production company Wolf Films in collaboration with Universal Television . The characters of the planned series were introduced in the first season finale, which aired on May 22, 2013. In May 2013, NBC gave the series, which bears the title Chicago PD , the green light for a first season of 13 episodes. The series has aired since January 8, 2014. Since then, there have been several crossover episodes with the mother series and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit .

Chicago Med

The series deals with the Chicago Med Hospital in Chicago. It premiered in the United States on November 17, 2015 on NBC. Chicago Justice
