Michael Hayden (born July 28, 1963 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) is an American actor .

Life

Hayden studied at Saint John's University in Collegeville , where he received his bachelor's degree . He then earned his Masters at the Juilliard School in New York City . Immediately after completing his master's degree, he was cast as Billy Bigelow in the musical Carousel on Broadway . He has been nominated for numerous awards for his performance, including the Olivier Award , the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. He was able to win the Theater World Award in 1994. The following year he made his television debut with the lead role in the television film Hell Torments - A family on the edge of Laura Leighton and Richard Crenna . Between 1995 and 1997 he appeared in the crime series Murder One in the role of Chris Docknovich . In 1997 he worked alongside Dennis Farina , Vanessa Redgrave , Nastassja Kinski and Franco Nero in the television production Bella Mafia .

Between 1999 and 2001 he appeared as Clifford Bradshaw in a Broadway production of Cabaret . In 2001 he played the role of defense attorney Rolfe in the Broadway adaptation of the film The Judgment of Nuremberg , who had played Maximilian Schell in the film . Schell himself portrayed Colonel Lawson in the play . Hayden was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor. In the early 2000s he appeared in several other television productions, including guest roles in the series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Criminal Intent .

In 2006 he appeared again as Clifford Bradshaw in Cabaret , this time at the Lyric Theater in London's West End . In 2010 he played the leading roles in the Shakespeare dramas Richard II and Henry IV for the Shakespeare Theater Company in Washington . Hayden has been Professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee since 2013 .
