S. Epatha Merkerson
S. Epatha Merkerson (* 28. November 1952 in Detroit , Michigan as Sharon Epatha Merkerson ) is an American actress .
Life
Merkerson was born the youngest of five children to Ann Merkerson. Her father was a factory worker. The parents separated in 1957.
She won the Golden Globe Award , the Screen Actors Guild , the NAACP Image Award, and the Emmy . She was also nominated for a Tony Award . She was best known for her role as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren in the long-running crime series Law & Order , which she held from 1993 until the end of the series in 2010.
Since 2015 she has played the role of hospital director Sharon Goodwin in the Chicago Med television series . Merkerson takes on the same role in Chicago Fire and Chicago PD , both of which are set in the same series .
