The Football League Third Division 1976/77 was the 50th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champion was Mansfield Town and in addition, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace , who ranked behind, also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1977/78, the second division clubs Carlisle United , Plymouth Argyle and Hereford United, ranked in the table below, took the places. Reading , Northampton Town , Grimsby Town and York City had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Cambridge United and Exeter City , Colchester United and Bradford City, placed behind them , took the vacant positions in the following season 1977/78 .

For the first time, when there was a tie, the goal difference was used instead of the goal quotient to determine the order within the table.
