Mariska Magdolna Hargitay (born January 23, 1964 in Los Angeles ) is an American actress , executive producer and director . She is best known for her long-standing leading role in the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit , for which she won a Golden Globe in 2006.

Life

Hargitay was born to actors Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay . At the age of three, she survived the car accident in which her mother died. Mariska and her brothers Zoltan and Mickey jr. sat on the back seat and got away with minor injuries.

Hargitay attended the University of California, Los Angeles , and after completing her bachelor's degree, took further courses in theater studies , but left the university without obtaining an advanced degree. She later became an actress and had her first role in the 1985 film Ghoulies . After that, she mainly appeared in American television series such as Falcon Crest , Tequila & Bonetti , Emergency Room , A single always comes alone , Baywatch , Love must be crazy and Seinfeld on. She received supporting roles in Hollywood films such as Leaving Las Vegas (1995). She played the lead role in the drama Murder in the Reeds (2004). Since 1999 she has played one of the leading roles in the crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit .

Hargitay is married to the actor Peter Hermann . The couple have a son (* 2006) and adopted a girl (* 2011) and a boy (* 2011) in 2011.

In 2004 she established the Joyful Heart Foundation for victims of sexual abuse.

Awards

For her role as Detective Olivia Benson in the US television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit , she received a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2005 and a Primetime Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2006 , after previously serving twice in a row Prize was nominated.

On November 8, 2013, Hargitay was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame .
