Lake Placid (German alternative title for television: Lake Placid - horror from the depths ) is a horror comedy by Steve Miner from 1999 with Bill Pullman , Bridget Fonda and Brendan Gleeson in the lead roles.

action

In scenic Lake Placid in Lincoln County , Maine , an employee of the US forestry department is fished dead from the lake after a dive - the lower half of the body has disappeared and the rest of the body has bite marks. During the autopsy , a supposedly prehistoric tooth is found in his corpse, whereupon the frustrated New York museum employee Kelly Scott is sent by her boss to Maine to look at this tooth. It doesn't take long to determine that the tooth is a crocodile tooth . There is no doubt that it must be a huge one. A team made up of County Sheriff Hank Keough, game warden Jack Wells, eccentric millionaire and crocodile researcher Hector Cyr, and Kelly Scott go on a hunt for the reptile .

Opinions about the target, i.e. whether the animal should be captured or killed, differ. The team agrees to capture the animal and is exposed to the dangers of the wilderness, which particularly tests the nerves of the city dweller Kelly.

Ultimately , the reptile is caught and stunned in a large-scale lock action in which a cow hanging from a helicopter is used as bait . When, surprisingly, a second crocodile appears and attacks, it is shot. The live specimen is shipped to Portland for inspection . In the final scene you can see how the eccentric widow Delores, who after the death of her husband lives alone by the lake (and had fed the crocodile or crocodiles with her cows for years), small crocodiles (apparently the babies of the two large crocodiles) feeds.

Reviews

  • Andrew O'Hehir wrote on Salon.com that the film is sometimes irritating and seems like a dream from the Ally McBeal series .

Remarks

The setting, Lake Placid, is not identical to the lake of the same name in the US state of New York . The film was in British Columbia - including in Shawnigan Lake  for about 27 million - US dollar turned. It was released in the US on July 16, 1999 and grossed around $ 56.9 million in cinemas worldwide.

In 2007, the sequel Lake Placid 2 was produced for US television. In 2010 a third part followed with Lake Placid 3 , which is also a television production. Griff Furst took over the direction . In 2012 Lake Placid 4 ( Lake Placid: The Final Chapter ) was created. The fifth part from 2015, Lake Placid vs. Anaconda , connects the series with the one that began with Anaconda from 1997. Lake Placid followed in 2018 : Legacy .
