action

In a world populated by anthropomorphic animals , the Koala Buster Moon has to fight hard for the survival of his theater. To prevent closure, he tries to make money by holding a singing contest . The winner is said to receive $ 1,000, but Buster's assistant Matilda Crawly, due to a mishap, writes a prize money of $ 100,000 on the leaflets that are distributed across the city by a gust of wind.

On the day of the audition, there are many more interested people in front of the Moon Theater than expected, including the stressed house sow Rosita, the arrogant and game-addicted white mouse Mike, the punk rock singing porcupine girl Ash and a gorilla named Johnny who would rather sing than to follow in the footsteps of his criminal father. They all got their hands on the leaflet and are dreaming of winning the competition. Rosita is supposed to perform in a duet with her singing partner Gunter, who can dance better than sing. The shy elephant girl named Meena, who had actually failed the audition, unexpectedly gets a job on the show and operates the stage technology of the theater.

When Buster learns of the typo made by Miss Crawly, and a bank employee also urges the outstanding debt to be paid immediately, the koala has to think of something new. He takes his best friend, the sheep Eddie, by surprise , and presents his idea of the show to his very rich grandmother Nana Noodleman, who was once a great singer herself and who also appeared on the predecessor of the Moon Theater. Buster hopes that the diva will then help him out of his financial hardship. Even if she's not really enthusiastic about Buster's idea, she agrees to attend a performance before the actual big show.

Everyone is preparing for this opportunity to show off their talent, and Buster comes up with a spectacular feature on stage. He is building a huge aquarium in which fluorescent squids are supposed to swim, which lights up the stage from behind. When Miss Noodleman comes to the performance, everything seems to be going well at first, but then the glass front of the aquarium cracks and the theater is completely destroyed by the resulting tidal wave, after fortunately all animals have been flushed out of the building.

The media is talking about a fiasco that is Buster's fault. The bank takes the theater away from him, and the koala who stayed with Eddie falls into a serious crisis. But even his promising singers, who believe that their singing career has now ended, feel a void in their lives after the sudden end of the casting show. Buster doesn't let the encouraging visit get him out of his depression, but when he hears Meena sing for the first time, his enthusiasm for the show returns. He wants to put on an open-air show in the ruins of his theater, where everyone should show what they can do. A makeshift stage is built and the event, which is televised, is a resounding success. Miss Noodleman buys the property back from the bank and has the theater rebuilt, which will soon be reopening.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK without any age restriction. The release certificate says: “The film has a cheerful mood, the characters are friendly and positive. Occasionally there are fast-paced tension and action scenes, which are always balanced out by calm and cheerful passages. Short appearances by a criminal gorilla gang and some mafia bears do not have a lasting effect due to the light and cheerful overall mood. "

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 72 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics . The consensus states: " Sing offers colorful, animated and happy entertainment with solid singing and a warm - albeit familiar - storyline that lives up to its title."

About the musical range that the film has in store, vienna.at explains , among the around 60 songs, from Elton John , from the Beatles and Queen to Taylor Swift , Carly Rae Jepsen and Sam Smith, there is something for parents and children alike. Günter H. Jekubzik from the Augsburger Allgemeine says about the integration into the film and the performance of the pieces of music : “All these small private dramas and the great battle for the old music theater offer plenty of action alternating with the original singing of US stars like Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson. Frenzied animation flights increase the pace, but luckily the conventional finale takes time for whole songs and round resolutions of all the stories of the colorful animal characters. "

Gross profit

In France, Spain, Portugal, Australia and Japan, the film landed at number 1 on the cinema charts after its launch. The film has worldwide revenues of $ 634.2 million, making the film 137th among the world's most successful films of all time.
