Axel Klausmeier (* 1965 in Essen ) is a German art and architecture historian and has been the director of the Berlin Wall Foundation since January 1, 2009 .

Career

Axel Klausmeier first studied art history , modern and medieval history in Bochum , Munich and Berlin . The subject of his dissertation was a biography of the English architect Thomas Ripley .

From 1999 to 2001 he volunteered as a research assistant at the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg . He then worked as an assistant at the Chair of Monument Preservation at the Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus . During this time, on behalf of the Berlin Senate, together with the chair holder Leo Schmidt , he researched the structural remains of the inner-city border in Berlin and published the results in a book in 2004.

In 2006 Klausmeier moved to the Institute for Monument Preservation at the ETH Zurich as a senior assistant . There he worked in science management. However, he left this position just one year later to take part as a research associate in the research project The Berlin Wall as a Symbol of the Cold War: from the instrument of SED domestic policy to the German Research Foundation 's monument of international standing .

In November 2008 Klausmeier was elected as the new director by the Board of Trustees of the Berlin Wall Foundation. On January 1, 2009, he officially took up the position. Since then, the extension of the Berlin Wall Memorial has been completed under his direction . In November 2012, the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus appointed Klausmeier as honorary professor . He represents the field of "Historical Cultural and Remembrance Landscapes".
