Charles Fremont Pond

Charles Fremont Pond (* 1856 in Connecticut , † 1929 in Berkeley ) was an American naval officer.

Live and act

Charles Fremont Pond began his training at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis on June 12, 1872 . After graduation on June 20, 1876, he served on the USS Tuscarora in 1877/1878 . On July 22, 1878, Pond was promoted to Ensign . From 1879 to 1883 he performed his duties on board the CS Steamers Hassler . From 1883 to 1884, Pond worked for the United States Hydrographic Office . This was followed in 1884 by a deployment on the USS Hartford and from 1885 to 1886 on board the USS Wachusett . On October 2, 1885, Pond was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade . He served in the United States Department of the Navy at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard . From 1887 to 1890 he served on the USS Ranger . His promotion to lieutenant took place on May 19, 1891. From December 1890 to 1894 Pond was again active for the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. In April 1894 he was ordered to the USS Alert . He then worked from June 1897 in the New York Navy Yard in New York City . In April 1897, Pond was posted to the USS Venezuela and in May 1898 to the USS Panther . On April 11, 1898, he was given command of the USS Iroquois . The promotion to lieutenant commander took place on July 1, 1899, since 1912 Pond was rear admiral . In 1918 he retired.

In 1880 Pond married the painter Emma McHenry Keith (1857–1934).

Honor taxon

While surveying the coast and the islands of Baja California with the USS Ranger , Pond collected numerous plants that he sent to his friend, the American botanist Edward Lee Greene (1843–1915). Greene named the cactus Mammillaria pondii in his honor .
