Leo Schmidt (art historian)

Leopold Rupert Schmidt (* 1953 ) is a German preservationist , art and architecture historian .

Life

Leo Schmidt studied art history, classical archeology and history at the Universities of Freiburg and Munich . In 1980 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD ; The subject of his dissertation was the building history of Holkham Hall .

From 1980 to 1995 he worked at the State Monuments Office in Baden-Württemberg ; he was responsible for the inventory of monuments in Baden. In 1995 he was appointed full professor at the Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus , where he held the chair for monument preservation until his retirement.

His work focuses on the practice and theory of monument preservation as well as the history of monument preservation and the concept of monument. Another focus is on the architectural history and monument preservation of English country houses , the architectural history of Wilhelminism and the significance of the Berlin Wall as a monument .

Leo Schmidt is an academic pioneer in dealing with the building history of the Berlin Wall and author of several publications on the remains of the border fortifications of divided Berlin.

Leo Schmidt has been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London since 2006 . He was the chairman of the working group “Technical Issues of Monument Preservation” of the German National Committee for Monument Protection .
