Godfrey MacArthur Cambridge (born February 26, 1933 in New York City , United States , † November 29, 1976 in Burbank , California , ibid) was an American actor .

Live and act

Before starting his acting career, Cambridge worked in various jobs, for example as a gardener, judo teacher, ambulance and taxi driver. From September 1956 he can be seen on New York off-Broadway stages (debut in Take a Giant Step ), in October 1957 he made his debut on Broadway. Almost at the same time, Cambridge made his debut in front of the television camera on the Phil Silvers Show, another year later he was brought to the cinema (in the drama The Wrath of the Righteous alongside Paul Munis, also shot in New York ). In the early 1960s, Godfrey Cambridge continued to appear on the stage (regularly until 1963) and demonstrated his comedic talent there. Cambridge received the Obie Award for his performance in Jean Genet's Die Neger .

Towards the end of the same decade, "along with the new self-confidence of blacks in the USA, which was also reflected in the film (e.g. When it gets dark in Manhattan )," the film career of the colored actor took shape, and man saw him with leading supporting roles in an abundance of films. Godfrey Cambridge died completely unexpectedly while filming the television film about the liberation of a hijacked Israeli plane in Kenya, Entebbe (Victory at Entebbe), in which he was supposed to play the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin . His part was taken over by Julius Harris . "Notorious as the butcher of humans in Uganda, Amin commented on the sudden cardiac death of 'his' actor Cambridge as" God's just punishment "."
