David "Dave" Khari Webber Chappelle (born August 24, 1973 in Washington, DC ) is an American comedian and actor .

Life

Dave Chappelle majored in drama and creative writing at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in America and joined as a teenager in Comedy Clubs in Washington, DC and New York district of Harlem on. In 1992, Whoopi Goldberg became aware of him, and he was allowed to appear in Comic Relief VI , which was a very great honor for him. Chappelle made a career as an entertainer and with various roles in Hollywood productions in the 1990s. His Chappelle's Show , which has been produced since 2003, was a great international success. In Germany the show was shown on Comedy Central and MTV . The subject of the satirical skits are often the racial clichés and conflicts that are widespread in the USA, which, due to Chappelle's own origin , are viewed from the perspective of the African American , but with a high degree of self-irony . Chappelle likes to use different accents in his appearances. At the height of his career, he was considered one of the best stand-up comedians in America.

In 2005, Dave Chappelle made headlines around the world for his exit from a $ 50 million contract with Comedy Central while filming season three. He fled to South Africa because he was unhappy with the direction the show was taking. Rumors followed that he was severely addicted to drugs and had spent time in a mental health facility. These turned out to be wrong. On February 3, 2006, Chappelle was interviewed by the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey . He said about his exit from the show: “At some point I didn't have a good feeling at work anymore, unlike before. I felt like I was prostituting myself. [...] The hardest thing is to be true to yourself, especially when everyone is watching ” . In 2017 he returned to stand-up comedy and recorded 4 new one-hour specials for Netflix . On February 19, 2007 , Chappelle appeared as a guest at a Prince concert .

In 2018 , he received a Grammy Award for his comedy album The Age of Spin & Deep in the Heart of Texas . A year later, Equanimity & the Bird Revelation received another Grammy. At the end of January 2020, Sticks & Stones won the Grammy Award for the best comedy album for the third time in a row .

In 2018 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year. For 2019, Chappelle was awarded the Mark Twain Prize .

Chappelle lives with his wife and two sons on a farm near Yellow Springs , Ohio, and converted to Islam in 1998 .
