Anton Jackson from LA, with Afro, gold-colored Cadillac and platform shoes, completely styled in funky seventies, got stuck in the seventies and likes to act like Robin Hood. In this function he attracts the attention of the black civil rights secret service BROTHERHOOD. He wants to free the black General Boutwell from the clutches of the villain The Man . Without further ado, Jackson is hooked up with top agent Sistah Girl and the initially not always harmonious duo is set on the diabolical super criminal The Man and his assistant Mr. Feather . On the American rating portal Rotten Tomatoes , 77% of a total of 130 reviews are currently positive, on Metacritic the film received a rating of 69%, which is made up of a total of 30 ratings, which indicates “generally benevolent ratings”.
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that Undercover Brother was for blaxploitation films what Austin Powers was for the James Bond genre. The film offers lots of laughs and, as it "reinvents itself every 20 minutes", can keep the audience interested. Berardinelli found it gratifying that Undercover Brother - unlike other contemporary comedies - does not rely on fecal humor. He particularly praised the portrayals of Eddie Griffin and Dave Chappelle.
The Lexicon of International Films wrote, “Austin Powers-style parody of agents that pays ironic reverence to the black-studded blaxploitation films of the 1970s. Over-the-top movie fun, in which not every gag is right, but which is entertaining nonetheless. "
